A mobile mech has looked at my poor punto, and come to the conclusion that it is the fuel pump not working. He said that if i can get the fuel pump he will fit it for me, but looking for a fuel pump has got me confused:confused: . What one do i get? Fuel injection pump? fuel pump electrical ? Not a clue!
My car is M reg, 1995, 90 elx injection special edition 1.6.

Sara,

Fuel pump lives inside the petrol tank. If you take the back seat cushion out/tip it forwards, you'll see an oval aluminium hatch, about 6" x 5", held down by about hald a dozen screws.

If you take this off, you'll see the top of the fuel tank and the fuel pump ring. This is a big white plastic "nut" (actually it will be round - typically about 4" diameter) that holds the fuel pump pressed into the top of the fuel tank.

The fuel pump is black and has 2 tubes (fuel pipes) going into it, plus a pair of wires for the fuel level indicator.

If you unscrew the ring, disconnect the pipes and remove the fuel sender plug, the fuel pump will just lift out. It's like a giant egg timer.. (you'll see when you take yours out).

Be careful though, as the tank is pressurised. As soon as you remove the fuel pipes you'll get a squirt of petrol out... It won't be much.. but it seems like gallons when it catches you out and sprays all over your face and car... :)

Any good motor factor or dealer will be able to find a new pump for you, or you could go for a second hand one.

Before you buy a new pump, check the old one. There's a short tube joining the fuel pickup at the bottom of the pump to the tubes at the top and sometimes this just comes undone. The fuel pump is actually okay but the link pipe is disconnected so the fuel just falls back into the tank instead of going to the engine. You can just reconnect and it'll be fine.

Obviously once you take your old pump out to check it, make sure you put it back (even if not completely tightened up) while you're waiting for parts to arrive - don't leave the car without the fuel pump in place, as that's quite a big hole at the top of the fuel tank... you'll get all sorts of rubbish in the tank.

Just to add its a 2.5 bar pump

You can use a punto mk1 75 (this is the MPI 8v), or Punto Sporting (1.2 16v) or the Punto GT, or the punto 1.6 sporting should you want to get a second hand one.

And also the pipes that connect to the sender unit are very very fragile - dont break!!
