Front pad/disc replacement on MK1 Punto

First Mk1 Punto so bought a CD based Workshop Manual off eBay - would probably have done better with a Haynes manual!

On the inside face of both disks there is 1cm band at the outer edge where the facing material has been eroded leaving a band of rusty crud. Is this a common Punto problem and if so what causes it? Never had it on any other car before.

Is the caliper bolt an 8mm allen/hex? (Manual no help here) Looks like it should be but think I may have broken one in the process of removal. I am sure I read in another post to use a scaffold bar - I only used my socket set!

Anything else I should be aware of??

Many thanks
Clive

Re: Front pad/disc replacement on MK1 Punto

i always found a slight rim on edge of my disks if not to deep i used to chip off , some one else might correct me but almost sure on the ones i have changed that caliper bolts were straightforward 17mm heads and came off with standard 1/2 inch socket wrench

Thanks for the response Jaybee bit....
... this is not a rim on the edge but 1cm of the face of the disc (nearest the rim). I would guess the faced surface of the disc is about 5cm radius and this band is the 'last' cm. Although its 20% of the radius as it is at the circumference of the disc the surface area damaged must be quite a bit more than 20%. However it is only on the inside near the stone shield - I was wondering whether that is a factor?

As far as the bolts holding the caliper on - I think the MK1 has one Allen bolt at the top and a pin at the bottom. Or is my memory letting me down?

Thanks
Clive

7mm Alan key for the bolts inside the rubber bits.

the 17mm bolts are what holds the caliper mounts on, scaffold bar is what the weedy cento boys use to undo their hub nuts

that bit of rust is normal, best post a pic though, you seem to have more than most

Re: Front pad/disc replacement on MK1 Punto

Are you sure it's 7mm? I have a 7mm allen key which I bought for my Multipla and that is too small for the Punto. An 8mm key doesn't seem to go in properly which is why I asked the question - just to ensure it isn't something odd like 7.5mm/spline/torx etc.

If you are right and it is 7mm then I am completely baffled!
