I have a Punto, 1.4 8v with 71,100 miles that has a weird quirk that's been going on for a few months and I believe I might be on the right track, but I just want someone to confirm or deny my suspicions.

The car has been juddering and losing power, causing the engine management light to come on, usually on a Saturday/Sunday when the garages are closed and then leave after a few days without leaving a trace of a fault code behind.

I've taken it to the garage and they've replaced the coil pack, HT Leads, Spark Plugs etc. hoping that might fix the issue, but to no avail.

However, I have noticed a pattern that it only has issues after a long trip where the car gets hot. It doesn't cause any issues on my short trips from home to work and back. I thought that I'd check the smell of the exhaust as it is running, to see if it's running lean or rich and noticed when it's cold, you get that typical fuel being burnt off smell, except when it's hot, you get a distinct lack of fuel smell and just smells of air.

I'm wondering if this is the MAP sensor on it's way out? It's getting too hot while the cars running and causing issues with the fuel/air mixture?

I've taken it to multiple garages and none of them have been able to figure out the fault and all believe it's the coil pack, HT leads or spark plugs, which have all been changed twice in the span of 6 months.

Any help would be very much appreciated, as I really enjoy using the car, but this problem is doing my head in. :bang:

Have the garage read out the fault codes from obd? And you can change the map sensor yourself, a new one doesn't cost much. Around 15 euros ( 15 , 20 dollars)
