hi all im new to puntos but not new to timing belts.
i have a fiat punto easy, its a 1.2 8v 2012 that runs up to 2018 and it was running before i changed the belt now im having issues after changing the timing belt its almost like i have a tooth or two out as its turning over and you can just here that it wants to start but never do? its also poping sometimes when turning over by the key?

ive timed the crankshaft on the bellhousing mark at 0 and used the tool to mark up the camshaft but for some reason now it wont start.

ive changed the crankshaft sensor as it was not talking to the snap on diagnostics computer and sparkplugs were changed aswell. i havent got it 180 degree out as the throttle body is sucking air in and not pushing air out. i turned it over by hand first and no valves were stopping it from turning.
also it has the vvt cam sprocket the one with extra bit on the outside:bang: im sure its called a phonic wheel but not totallly sure?

any ideas would be of great help

Hi

What work did you do..?

Thats a lot of parts swapping.. plenty of room for error

See the 500 section for VVT cambelt info ;)
hi and thank you for your reply.

the timing belt was due so i had to change it.
removed air box, removed utility belt, removed utilily belt pully removed plastic cam sprocket cover and crank cover, romeved ecu mount for room to get the rocker cover off removed engine mount, loosened the tensioner took the timing belt off and

stupid me forgot to tipex where it was in the first place. but hey had the cam tool anyway.

put it back together with the marking on the flywheel on 0 also checked the crank marking on the crank sprocket and with the cam tool. the belt went on like a dream come true the markins on the belt matched up the bottom and top where the tiny dimples are.
the ecu hasent been unplugged just moved the the side and mount bolted back on.

tryed starting it, its seemed like a spark issue so checked spark plugs 1 was snapped and rusty god knows how long its been in there so changed the sparkplugs all 4 getting spark strong smell of petrol though.

got the snap on computer from a mate to use and it wasnt talking to the crank sensor, i thought great thats the problem. but tryed starting it and just turns over trying to start and slight popping that sounds like throttle body poping but its sucking not blowing.

ive checked electrical plugs and wiring is ok but not if there will be something underlying somewhere. im just sure ive done everything correctly but thats where im at with it now.

thanks i will check out 500 vvt section

Was it running properly for weeks before?

Plug broke coming out.. or suspect before..??
it was running pretty good before i done the job.
no it wasnt when coming out,

but the metal connector was stuck in the coil lead it was runing ok suprisingly but the odd misfire every now and then.

i shall have a read of that link asap thank you

Did you use timing tools?
If not you really need to get some and get it time's up correctly now
yes i have the cam tool only but bottom mark 0 on bell housing should be good enough as i checked tdc through no1 spark plug hole (nothing fell in there lol) and the mark on the crank sprocket.
but maybe your right?

Err..

The 16v motors dont use TDC

Not sure about the VVTs

Did you see this GUIDE?

the punto i have is an 8v but with the phonic wheel, im reading about in the thread you kindly sent me to read, im still reading the thread its very interesting.

ok so i should seriously get the other parts of the timing kit. im on it!

i know this is an interferance engine and would've felt a valve hit as i was only using a 3/8 rachet to turn the engine by hand 8 times with compresion (sparkplugs in) and without compression the (sparkplugs out), Before i'de turned the key for the final start.

but the phonic wheel, if i did not undo the centre bolt shouldn't it be where it's allways been?
sorry if im sounding a bit dull.

Ive not timed a VVT

BUT.. your basic poor running sounds more that the traditional Phonic Wheel

This tends to flag at high RPM..
Otherwise they run ok

OLD style FIRE motors would run acceptably a few teeth out of time..

SO its possible you are a tooth out

I got the rest of the timing tools today, going to get on it in the morning. i will update after that.
thanks for the replies

hi guys thank you for your advise especially varesecrazy,
all is well now, its runing like a dream.
i couldn't get on it for a few days as this british weather took over and hammered down.
the timing marks on the flywheel is not the timiing mark for this punto as its timing half way through the first stroke,
which for me is a bit unusual but hey its working thats all that counts ?,
i just wish i got the timing tool sooner rather than later.
