Headlights are always running when ignition/key is on electric only is on same with interior dash and buttons - smaller lights interior and exterior flicker - stalk still has the 3 clicks and high beams work still. The ‘check running lights’ comes up but one of the DRL plugs fell out long ago but stopped working on there own before that.

Any thoughts?
I’ve checked the fuses 7.5 & 5 on exterior box and they’re good

Probably linked to your ABS error

Tell us more about your time with the car

We need to build a picture of what failed when.. after what work was done.. etc ;)

Charlie

Hi Charlie - my headlights where before my abs - first my DRLs went out and just never came back in and wouldn’t work - I always thought when my stalk lost control of my headlights it was after I went over a speed bump too hard. This was a good good while ago and I’ve just continued to be let down by people to look at it. My friend is pretty handy with his VW and has had a look at fuses etc - my smaller bulbs keep flickering when I unlock or leave the car as well. I’ve had it since 2017.
I have my ABS light on and the light bulb light on as well as headlights light on. The dash stays light when the key is in but all goes off when I take key out

This sounds like a problem I had.

Inside the indicator/light stalk are a red and black wire. One of these was snapped right at the bend.

To check for yourself, you can pry out the plastic part at the back of the stalk. This is non destructive and you should be able to put it back without too much of a problem but it is a little fiddly. Once inside, give each of the cables a gentle tug to see if they are loose.

If they are loose, you'll have to remove the airbag and the then open up the entire indicator stalk assembly to get good access to it. Instead of just soldering the broken cable back up, I created a bridge between the broken ends with a stronger cable as it would again be exposed to pinch point at the bend.

There's a really good video on YouTube for how to remove the indicator stalk (but it's in Italian so you might have to replay a few times to see what he's doing)
