Running rough and engine light flashing

My 2013 105 Multiair started up this morning and was running really rough and shuddering. I drove up the road about 100 yards and the engine light was flashing only when driving and the little warning triangle light was lit up. The only message on the screen was "stop start unavailable".

I've called my breakdown provider and they are on their way. I've started it again since and it runs fine.

Weird.

Any ideas?

Re: Running rough and engine light flashing

Connect a diag tool like MultiECUScan to read ECU.

Hope you have DTC codes, otherwise it will be guessing what has happened.

The breakdown guy plugged it in but there were no faults.

The car also runs fine now.

He put it down to it having a "funny five minutes" but recommended taking it to the dealers for their opinion.

Re: Running rough and engine light flashing

If you have no code recorded I think the dealer can't do anything.

No code recorded + no problem now = really hard to find the cause.

Hmm, maybe I'll just have to keep an eye on it and take it in if it happens again.

I think I will log it with the dealer just in case it happens later down the line and an issue arises. May be handy if it's out of warranty and I've notified them.

Perhaps the scan at Fiat is better and they will find something ?

Good idea, at least they record the problem "in case of".

Sounds like the MultiAir unit is on its way out, from those symptoms. Pretty common problem and would be covered by warranty.

I think I need to get it in the dealers.

I've also noticed a bit of a tappet like noise under acceleration in the last week or so. All sounds a bit suspect from reading the Alfa forum.

I only had an oil & filter change last week at the dealer - correct oil was used as far as I am aware. Selenia K 5w40.

This sounds quite worrying.

I couldn't find any threads on FF about this but saw a few of the Alfa forum.

If this is only an intermitant issue and no fault codes logged how will the dealer diagnose if this is the underlying problem.

It's booked in next Wednesday 5th Nov.

Re: Running rough and engine light flashing

No worries it can be a lot of thing instead the multiair unit.... An injector, a spark plug, a coil of a spark plug (4 coils type pen IIRC on the 105), a solenoid of the MA or effectively the MA unit.

But dont worry too much, I know many of MA cars (135, 180) and they are fine. One is a first Punto Evo, but with few km, never had a problem.

Re: Running rough and engine light flashing

TBH i have only heard of Alfa's Mito at least in Greece breaking down and not Fiats.
I also asked a friend Fiat dealer and he said that no Punto has showed there for Multiair unit change.

It seems that the turbo versions are more vulnerable which is all that's in the Alfa's isn't it? I don't think they fitted the 105 MultiAir to any cars?

The guy I spoke with in the service department at my local dealer said they had carried out 1 MultiAir replacement, I think he said on a Punto. But problems are few and far between, most being absolutely fine.

I'm dropping it off tomorrow now so will report back.

Re: Running rough and engine light flashing

The dealer have found a fault code which indicated a misfire but it hasn't happened since and they've tested it thoroughly and can't find any issues so I'll just have to keep an eye on it.

They have been pretty helpful to be fair to them.

Re: Running rough and engine light flashing

Thanks for feedback.

"Official" tools seems better, at least you have a code.
But as you dont have issue anymore it's hard to go further :/

Re: Running rough and engine light flashing

Sorry, I somehow managed to miss this thread when I've logged in over the last few days. Glad the dealer was helpful. They did offer the 105 MultiAir in the MiTo but few were sold here. Most people seemed to go with the non-MultiAir 1.4 (78 or 95bhp) or the MultiAir Turbo 135.

It does seem mostly the 135 and 170 MultiAir's that the MA unit goes on, but that might be down to sales volumes as much as anything else. I'm sure at least one person had a problem with oil round the spark plugs on their 105 MultiAir Punto, which I believe is linked to MA unit failure, but if it's working again now, just keep an eye on it. It'd be running rough all the time if it'd failed. The dealer should have a log of the cars visit now, so if it does fail down the line hopefully there should be no fuss getting it replaced FOC - they cost about 900 otherwise, from reading about the Alfa failures.
