Where are Fiat going with the Punto?

After purchasing my Punto Evo and my first Fiat car nearly 2 years ago, I have to say that there's just something about a Fiat that makes me enjoy driving it, something that can't really be put into words.

However, after something a bit more punchy than the 1.4 8v, having been into my local Fiat dealer, and a quick scan on the configurator, there doesn't seem to be any bigger engines available. The 1.6 MJet, or Multiair Turbo don't seem to be available anymore since the introduction of Twinair Technology I can only presume.

Since other car manufacturers seem to at least have a fairly powerful version of their small hatch, like Ford with their Ecoboost, VAG's 1.4 TSI in the Ibiza/Polo, even the Corsa has a Turbo version, it leaves me wondering where Fiat is going with the Punto. Yes the Twinair technology is very clever, but it's only at 105HP and that's just for the 500, plus from having a scout around on here it seems to be miles off the mark with MPG figures.

Another point is Automatic Transmissions. (Yes, some of us do like them) VW's fantastic DSG, and the Powershift from Ford, plus there's supposedly a new twin clutch box coming from Vauxhall in the new Corsa. Alfa has the TCT box, yet Fiat still decide to use the crappy, clunky and slow changing Dualogic. Surely they can get their hands on the TCT box. It couldn't be worse than the Dualogic.

All of this leaves me thinking, where are they intending to go with the platform? Outdated engines and transmissions. The body style from the Grande is good looking, but it's been around since 2006 and surely do a bigger refresh than the previous 2 attempts.

Anyone else thinking similar things?

Fiat will stop Punto production this year, or at least 2015....
Don't expect anymore hot Punto's from Italy...

Re: Where are Fiat going with the Punto?

If the information is correct that Punto production will stop then I question why Fiat have gone to the expense of facelifting the Punto again
Surely if the life of the punto was that short, they wouldn't retool for such a short time.

There was a thread on the forum showng the new face and tail.

Given the engine range options at the moment, I do suspect that the life of the GP is limited.

apparently this is a version Destined for INDIA..!!,
where they didn't get the EVO facelift ( luckily...)

they also get a GP lookalike " crossover / SUV", which I actually quite like the look of,

If you want a hot Punto, you leave Fiat and go to Abarth.

The APE would've been perfect, but sadly it is no more. I've sat in an A500, but being well over 6ft, I can only describe it as like this...

Re: Where are Fiat going with the Punto?

Well for a start Charlie the Evo is so much better looking than the Grande so im sure India will be delighted.

Im not sure how many unregistered Supersports are left but you can still pick one up for a bargain. Lots of people dont like to use the word new for these cars as they were finished last September. However for many years all manufacturers have stored cars for lengthy periods and still sold them as new.

Im over 6 foot myself but I found the 500 pretty comfy. But the boot space is ridiculous and they ask too much for the 595 as its fashionable.

The entire future of Fiat is unknown as its said that the Agnelli family went to sell up and concentrate on Ferrari. The VW purchase seems unlikely now but if they want to sell somebody will buy.

That is quite frankly, terrifying. I have to put up with being teased about it a lot, but I absolutely love Fiats. I'm now on my 2nd Punto, and intend to stick with Puntos for as long as poss. I hate the current styling directions that most companies have committed to, and for me personally, the current model Punto is still the best looking supermini around.

I hope vw don't buy Fiat, as I want a Fiat to be a proper Fiat, not just a rebodied vw with a cheaper, nastier interior. (I.e like the Fabia and Ibiza) It may well be low-tech these days, but I'd still prefer a nice, characterful Fiat engine to a dull, boring vw unit.

Fiat aren't going anywhere and neither is the punto. The 5 year plan did show a replacement for the punto I believe.

Still called the Punto, or to be part of the 500 family?

Re: Where are Fiat going with the Punto?

I dont understand what Fiat is doing with the Punto, the Beautiful car that is a best seller since more than 20 years !
Of course since months sales are dropping, but with 3 engines, no dual clutch TCT gearbox and fewer and fewer options it's hard to sell more; no ???

My last hope is they make a facelift with more engines :
http://www.autoedizione.com/scoop-fi...-around-italy/

You can see the white car has nozzles on the bonnet to clean windshield, which was never the case for the Grande Punto / Punto Evo / Punto 2012+.
And hope this awful Indian Punto will never sold here.

Re: Where are Fiat going with the Punto?

Again, Fiat has decided to stop production of the Punto soon, they will stop producing the Alfa MiTo as well, as it's heavily based on the Punto...
Of course there will be another small model as replacement, expect it to be totally different from the current Punto...
