Technical new engine

ive got a 2014 fiat punto, easy, with a 1.2 8v engine

i want to replace it with a 1.4 8v engine

is this as simple as buying the new engine or not?

If you just pop it in and use the 1.2 ECU and wiring, fuel and ignition will be fired as the 1.2, restricting power and possibly melting pistons if the fuelling and timing do not suit at all.

Ideally you'd need the engine ECU for the 1.4, but then you may have difficulty getting it to work in the "wrong" car. Initially the engine ECu and car body computer will refuse to communicate. A proxy alignment using MultiECUScan might work, but there is a high risk of it not doing so.

Engine, engine computer and body computer from a similar model should work, in theory, but would need identical options, such as foglights, airbags, aircon, etc., otherwise "new" body computer will then not operate the car properly.

Once you get it working, your insurance company will treat it as a special and hike the premium.

Save up for a complete car might be a better idea. Insurance will treat it better too.

If funds are insufficient, relax, go with the flow and enjoy the 1.2.

Short answer : buy another Punto with 1.4 8V.

Seems a lot of hassle and cost on a brand new car, cut your loses and part ex it down your local fiat dealer for a 1.4i 8v GBT or Jet Black 2

It's completely pointless anyway both feel similar in performance terms which is very pedestrian.

I driven both the 1.2 and 1.4 engines and the 1.4 feels better and does have that little extra power to get you out of trouble over the 1.2. But the 1.4i 8v is a pretty good engine anyway, its not super fast but is a good balance. Anyway; Jimbbob, did you get your 14 plate punto brand new or second hand. If your not too happy, you could part ex it in for something quicker such as a Fiesta ST, Corsa VXR or if you like your Punto then what about a second hand Punto Abarth. If you can afford it then maybe cutting your loses now is a good idea.


But then again it all depends on your age, if your 19 years old then insurance is going to murder you on anything hot hatch like.
