On reading the manual it recommends the timing belt change at 4 year old.

Just wondering how accurate that really is?

Has anyone tested the theory of not doing it?

I only plan to keep it till it is 5 yr old and dont really want the possibly of unnecessary expense

How many KM do you have ?

You have to do the belt after 4-5y (depend climate, usage... see manual) OR at 120'000km. The first reached count..

It cost me £180 for genuine parts full belt kit and water pump plus fitting and sundries at a fiat specilist. For that money is it worth the drama of the potential headache of not having it done

Any car you buy, you should have the belt done. Just for peice of mind really. Buy genuine parts but find a small garage in your area to fit it, usally can save alot of money by doing so.

I bought a '10 Punto Evo just two months ago and it had just under 20k at the time of buying.. should I be looking into getting the timing belt changed?
Current mileage is ~21200...

Its a gamble. If it fails then goodbye engine.

It is highly unlikely to fail before 5 years old but you will de-value the car if it is not done at re-sale time.

On FIAT DOHC engines, many belts broke before the recommended 12.000km- 6 years interval, so Fiat shortened it to 60.000km (=37500mls) OR three years, although many handbooks still say otherwise...
But not many Punto's with DOHC ( Lampredi) engines here I guess.
I have no experience with FIAT OHC engines, but strongly advise to stick to the factory recommendations, they will change sometimes during the time a car is build, so to be sure, ask an official FAT dealer or even better, customer/ technical service at the importer.

Is they any history of the belt being changed when you bought the car ? if not then get it done yourself. Because the car is now 4 years old, its worth getting it done reguardless of mileage. Remember to get the water pump done at same time.

Thanks for the quick replies..

Just had a look at eurocarparts.com and they have the following brands for timing belts fitting my evo, Continental ContiTech, Ina, and SKF. The contitech seems to be the recommend one.. anyone any experience buying parts from euro car parts? Or should I be looking elsewhere?

To be honest I would stick too original fiat parts for something like the timing belt. Im not saying they is anything wrong with 3rd party parts but the car only being 4 years old, just saying

Hi,
if you got a local non-FIAT garage to do the job,
that is the same quality parts as they would use..,

SKF + INA are bearing manufacturers..;)

I bought my last kit from them = SKF , it was fine.

TBH if you are fitting the kit yourself.. the warranty is worthless anyway.

Thanks for all the feedback! (y)

I'll stick with original fiat parts. I came across a post on the forum pointing me to http://www.shop4parts.co.uk and they seem to have genuine fiat (also alfa romeo) parts.

I also came across another post recommending Firela Motors who are fiat specialists, and read some good reviews so I'll go visit them..

Are you getting it done too? Was about to post asking the same. Mines required but I've done 25,500 miles. Seems stupid with it so low. But it's 4years old.

I'm going on holiday to Italy with family and dad's car, so I will do it after I come back... but I am definitely changing the timing belt and water pump...

Went to an independent mechanic and he quoted me £400 to change timing belt, water pump and do a major servicing (parts included).. but he says that if the timing belt doesn't need to be changed after a proper inspection, then he recommends I should leave it...

Honestly I wish I could drive my car to Italy and do the service there lol.. dad lived there and owned a Fiat so he knows people :D

Does he give you a written guarantee for this?
If not, find a real mechanic with Fiat experience....!!

I've been quoted £599 by a dealer for the work. Needs an mot too. Not sure whether a dealer or local garage. I've had it since new and there's not many local specialists. The only one is one I don't trust.
I know it needs 2 tyres and an mot. Could be a very expensive month.
