Over the past week I have started to notice when I first use the brakes after leaving my car standing for about 5 hours, their is a grinding noise coming from them. The nosie goes away after applying the brakes about 4 or 5 times.

My car is a punto 1.4 and is only 8 months old and less than 10k on the clock. In the past week it has been very cold and snowing quite abit.

Before I take it back to fiat I just want some advice on what causing this problem. I don't brake hard or often as I drive alot on the motorway and I don't believe the pads could be worn, not on a brand new car.

Anything I can do or look for ? thanks

hi there i have the same problem only my car is 3months old and 1000 miles, and it happened from a week after it was delivered. my dealer said it was me using the handbrake too much but it is still happening and i leave it in gear now , so this friday its going in and i will update you with what they say.

It come from the rear brakes ?

With the 1.2 8V & 1.4 8V you have drums in the rear. If you always do soft braking it could come a little noise...

My car make this this winter, but this is my first car with drums in the rear. I do a good braking and this go away for some times.

It can be caused by using parking brake, the pad can stick a little to the drums, and when it turn it make this noise.. until you brake and deposit go out.

Perhaps its ABS making noise?

On my route to work there is a small downhill braking spot with manholes, usually its the first time I brake to halt on the way. Noticed that ABS goes bananas every time I brake there (its winter and those manhole covers are slippery). Keeps rattling even after stopping

I have the same problem (Car less than 4 months old 7k on the clock) I park on a small hill with the handbreak and on gear but every morning I clutch down and take the handbreak off and the car goes nowhere like if the breaks still on... it takes a gentle pull on first gear to get the car moving.

I went away for a month on holidays and left the car parked on a flat bit and still had the same problem, this time i had to pull really hard to get the breaks off because i was literal dragging the back wheels across the street.

This and the stupid window washers are really getting to me now...

mines been getting that too like a grinding noise that brakes usually make when a cars been standing for weeks, even had one of the rears lock on when we had all that snow must be water ingress in the drum somehow?

Well went to my dealer today and they took the wheels off had a good look and said the brakes were in perfect condition. Also said it may be the handbrake being too tight , but said nothing wrong and I was basically to get on with it!

Some news here, today I had a wheel locked when I go out of park.. hard to drive with. It was unlock when a drived on a road without snow, with a acoustic "clac".

Removed the wheels and drums to see in, humidity was here. I think pad was sticked on drum, but dont know how I can avoid this to happen...

If anyone has an idea ? Thanks ;)

I took the car back to fiat, to be honest they were just trying to fob me off by saying its normal and all puntos do the same. Also trying to say it's just rust on the discs, they must think people are stupid. Rust goes after a few brakes and doesn't return once the car is standing still for 15 minutes.

But still they took the car in and gave the brakes and drums a good clean (so they said). When I picked the car up and testing the brakes, the grinding is very quite now and only happens at slower speeds.

After reading these forums reguarding the problem, I believe they is a fault with the braking system in some way (bad parts, bad design etc) and fiat are just keeping quite about it.
