This modification is illegal for rod use in most countries. Looking at the lght pattern you can see why.

Yes,
The Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations
http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1...lation/14/made
is the basic one which says that the bulb must be appoved and marked ( "E" or BS mark). Fundamentally you must fit the same type of bulb e.g. H4 as was used in the light when it was approved. You can't get a approved LED replacement for a filamment lamp. Part of it is basic physics, the reflector was designed to work with a small, light source that radiates in all directions and is placed in exactly the right place in the reflector. LEDs can be small but they emit light over a limited angle and those that produce light levels high enough for a headlight are not small and many are needed so the source is much larger than a filament and cannot be in the right position.

that dont confirm it like what the hid info does, there are many leds on the market some have many smds some only have 2 or 4. is there no docment that clearly states the fitting of leds? after all people have been using them for side lights for many years and ive yet to here of anyone getting into trouble with the police for them. I was going to put led headlight bulbs on my xmas list.

Re: LED Headlight

I think it is very clear. It states any replacement bulbs must be E marked. There are no E marked LED replacements for halogen headlamp bulbs. I've not found any "simple" guidance, but rememeber it's only the courts that can make the final determination. I'm not a lawer, but do deal with technical legislation as part of my "day job" so am very certain of the position, there are no legal LED replacements. Note that NONE of the major manufacturers offer LED replacement headlamp bulbs.

that's a good point but they never made led gu10s when they first came out though only started making them when no one was buying their standard bulbs any more. part of me thinks they may not want us to use bulbs that last so much longer

Oh they want to make them. Osram say they are working on it, see
https://www.osram.com/osram_com/tool...ting/index.jsp
under "Why are exterior applications allowed off-road only?"

Re: LED Headlight

Just had another thought,
If we still used sealed beam headlights it would be easy to make and approve an LED replacement
I guess the market is a bit small now.

Robert G8RPI.

P.S. Just searched and they are available!
http://www.grote.com/family/led-sealed-beam-headlights/
So Classic Fiats have a legal option

Re: LED Headlight

First off - I detest the dazzle we get these days from so many car headlights. I also detest not being able to properly see where I'm going.

The latest LED bulbs have at least as good focus as the old halogens and probably better than a super bright (short life) halogen. While being technically not road legal they will be very unlikely to fail an MOT** or give an officer of the law any concern about the bulbs. A blown halogen headlight will quickly have you pulled over, apart from being a menace in bad weather.

That said, buy cheap and you risk being a danger to others and yourself. Good quality LEDs are not cheap especially in H4 format. They have emitters the same size as the halogen filament so not surprisingly they give the same beam pattern.

** UK MoT test is concerned that fitted lamps must work. If any don't work it's a fail. The headlamp dip beam must have a correct pattern with no scatter at the edges. Main beam can do what it likes as it's not tested for pattern other than simply lighting up. The tester does not pull any bulbs to check the CE status.

Re: LED Headlight

Aftermarket LED replacements for halogen bulbs will nver have "good focus" or correct beam patterns. As of May 2018 the UK MOT includes a specfic check for headlight conversions so they are now much more likely to result in an MOT failure.
