Punto (Mk2/2b) How to change the Punto steering coloumn shaft

Hello Ziggy122,
I have the same noise in my steering wheel, I changed the whole column but no good result. Could you tell me where from did you buy the steering column shaft. It's a brand new one or a used one? How much did you paid for it?

The only 1 availible in the scrap yard near me was a different spline setup - so i was not able to fit it

So the original went back in, as of yet - not found a suitable donor one

I did say as well - its a rare part to fail....

did one last week
mk2 rack is different to mk2b on the splines
never knew that
my theory is mk2 rack wound up torque steer too much so mk2b rack has less lock to stop the failure
hope that helps someone
oh and i taped up the airbag clock spring before removal as this one wanted to turn because the locking clip seemed to have failed

all ok on reassembly though

Yea there is diffrent splines
Hence when i went to get scrappy one and quickly found out it wasn't....

i think mk2b has 1, but iirc reading somewhere there are 2 or 3 for the mk2 rack

How much did you pay for your new coloumn part? Was it new or 2nd hand/scrappy?

I got a new steering column shaft, as the pinch bolt knuckle bit at the top has completely snapped last weekend (have a thread on here re. This issue)

I paid £79.64 to be precise, this was brand new from a dealership!! I know was a while ago this question was asked, but thought I'd share my answer...

I decided to buy the part new and from a dealership, as opposed to just heading down local scrappy as you can't put a price on safety!!

I have the same clunking noise in my mk2b Punto, only recently realised it was coming from the steering column. Driving through potholes is terrible (cobblestone streets being the worst).
How can I tell if the noise is coming from the column shaft? Is there anything else on the steering column that could come loose and make noise?
