Thanks for this guide / help page. I was going to re-locate the red wire from the stereo connector to point to the switched live in the loom. I will however use the switched live off the cigarette lighter instead.
Looking at the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual, the switched live in the loom for the stereo goes back into what is called the 'Multi-Timer unit'. I'm guessing this really won't like having anything fed back down it?

There is only one full time live in a mk2b punto at the stereo loom and its constantly live so even with key in your pocket its still pumping volts, ie your radio runs the risk of flattening the battery over a period of car non use or worse some car stereos get very hot if left with permanent live going down the yellow and red cables to the stereo because you joined them both up and could cause a fire over a longer period of time it actually says in many instruction manuals not to join these wires, last one i saw a month ago was an expensive pioneer manual so obviously manufacturers are pretty keen you dont do it.
The other risk is the factory stereo works by talking to the main control unit to confirm that its the right one ie they are coded together on whats called a can bus connection these cables send messages rather than 12 volts so if you dont leave these cables going nowhere when you connect up your aftermarket stereo you run the risk of sending voltages down the wrong wire, first thing you will notice is the yellow light of engine management and when code read this always comes up as a speed sensor fault, caught early you can clear the code disconnect your errors and car will live another day.,i know this by having done it by accident .

I break em to fix em, sometimes, so my advice is as follows for a later 2b wiring loom equipped aftermarket stereo

Buy a connecting iso lead and face plate plus obviously the aerial connecting pin
Locate the one fulltime 12 constant power lead on the car loom and make sure this goes to unswitched aftermarket stereo lead usually the yelow lead I use a multimeter but a bulb would suffice (ignition turned off)

Piggyback ideally by soldering a new power cable from the switched live on the cig lighter ,you will need to do some dismantling to get to this but its in the guides, run this new lead in some washer pipe as it goes past the crash protection cage for the dashboard which is very sharp in places, connect this cable to the red on your new iso connecting lead
You should now find on the power lead on your new iso lead you have only 3 wires connected to the radio itself ,a yellow, a red and a black all other coloured cables from car iso now hopefully go nowhere so no chance of any backward power going down them
The other iso plug lead is all speaker connections and thus doesnt need touching

You will find its hard to put the radio in the dash when all connected up because the hole wasnt designed for an aftermarket unit ,persevere and try to feed as much loom down the back right hand side hole before sliding radio in,thin hands help here
Your radio will fit if you go carefully
Convert the standard aerial connection from ISO to Din so you can connect an aftermarket car radio these are available for 99pence on ebay whereas last time they were £5 each in maplins or halfords when i looked just like the iso leads are much cheaper on ebay too so a little planning saves a lot of cash

Interested to try this, never really done any auto wiring before though (mainly household and computers).

To fix the new wire from the cigar lighter power, can I use a spade connector? Is it worth heatshrinking once I know it's hooked up properly? Also, will this line require an inline fuse or is the cigar lighter's enough to handle it?

What's the spec for the new wire from the ignition? Is it just copper wire (8AWG) stuff?

simplest way to take power off ciggie lighter switched live is bare cable twist in new cable solder then heatshrink
ive never used an inline fuse as ciggie lighter has one and all quality radios have one
never went to school on wire spec so just use cable up to or more than for the job

Which of these do you tap into in order to create your new ignition ready cable?

Hi Guys, I have taken the original radio out. I had a Pioneer radio from 1999 which along with wiring has a 1 inch power box which needs to be hidden behind the radio, but how do I dismantle the dash to fit this box so it falls in the back

with great displeasure - its a case of trying to feed items down the L/H or R/H sides where the wiring all goes to make room

Fitting a punto stereo with extra long looms is somewhat painful im affraid

I've had the clocks out to try and pull wiring down, but its a case of keep tying to make sure it all sits correctly

Any wires you crop or rejoin - ensure they are properly protected to prevent shorts/sparks/fire

Hello there cheers for the solution one important question though which is or should I say what colour is the perm 12v live from the car loom? I assume red/white fiat Punto 1.2 sport active 2006 thanks in advance. P.s any tips on geting at the ciggy lighter for a ignition live?

Bought a punto to get to work, it had a basic goodmans radio in. Will be upgrading Wednesday, took the old one out and found two sets of connections, can't find a wiring guide for love nor money, nor what the coloured block is. If anyone can help thanks.

That I believe is the standard ISO fit wiring

Coloured blocks might be for the CD changer under back seat.. or Amp -or Sub..in the boot

Thanks, I knew the iso, just didn't know the coloured blocks, even asked a guy at the fiat garage haha. Could it have had the speaker upgrade package at one time? I'll have a play on Wednesday when the speakers and stereo get here, paid more for that than the car.

Can someone confirm if this is what I essentially have to do:

I locate the constant 12v power lead ( which i presume is the red and black wire, not sure if anyone else's is but previously when attempting to work on central locking I identified this red and black wire to be constantly live) which essentially, I should find the constant power lead where the cig lighter is?

and I expose the copper wiring and connect (solder) an additional wire to the yellow wire (whichever unswitched lead colour it is, which can someone just clarify what it's meant by unswitched aftermarket stereo lead? )

So to simple it down, find constant power, which is the cig lighter. Get extra wire (black as used above) connect said black wire from the constant 12v lighter wire to the yellow wire (which is the unswitched lead?

Is everything described here still the same process? Except for I would need a cable like this right?
