Hey,
This guide will show you how to install an engine push start button on your Punto! Installed one on my '53 Plate MK2B punto however the wiring may be different on other versions.

NOTE: You WILL need to have your keys in the ignition for the button to work. Yeah, I know its unfortunate but having one that will, will compromise security. If you want something like that, there are £200 kits out there that will do the job.

So with that out of the way, lets get started! :D

Things you will need:
- A button of somekind. I got mine for £2 from a small parts dealer but any will do. Maplins sells a selection for around the same price so if your struggling to find one from the small dealers go there
- Some insulated copper wire (about 1.5 meters). Any will do, can get it from B&Q or a parts dealer. Pretty much any hardware store tbh.
- Some electrical tape. Again you can get this from any hardware store
- Allen Keys! Youll have some in the garage, but again a hardware store for these
- Phillips Screwdriver Again, garage or hardware store
- Wire Strippers Again, garage or hardware store
- Tooth Pick or some thin object to prize wires open!
- Spanner, to remove the nuts that hold the battery.

Total cost: Around £5 :D

Step One: Getting started
BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY!!

Right, to start off your going to need to remove:-
Fuse box Panel
Steering Wheel Panel
Dashboard

Get your allen keys and screwdrivers at the ready!
To remove the fuse box panel unscrew the large plastic screws at the top of the panel as shown below:

To remove the steering wheel panel there are 4 bolts that need to be removed with an allen key. Two are underneath the steering wheel itself and two are at the bottom of the panel in the direction of the pedals, next to the handle for adjusting the steering wheel. Picture shown below is of the top two:

Finally to remove the dash you will need remove 4 allen key bolts. Two are located on the bottom corners on both the passenger side and drivers side of the car. The other two are underneath the cigarette lighter hidden away which are a pain in the arse to remove if you havent got a longish allen key. Picture shown below of side bolts:

Also remove all the wires connected to the panels! Simply unclip the white box bit to do it.

Step Two: Choosing the position of your button
Also by this point you should have chosen your place to put the button. I put mine in replacement of the cigarette lighter but you can put it elsewhere if you want to drill. Note that you cant put it where the 'extra' unused button on the dash is. Trust me ive tried and there is a switchboard behind it that is quite close to them which is a pain :|
Anyway, it was quite a pain taking the lighter out, you need to remove the orange and silver bits by pressing on these tiny holes. Took me over an hour to figure it out.
Anyway by the time youve done that you should have a nice hole to where your button can sit!
The cigarette lighter cables can just be tucked into the dash as they are no longer needed.

Step Three: Fiddling with the ignition
Now youve got to take out your ignition wires from the barrel. Just follow the barrel down to the bottom. Simple enough, just unclip the two white boxes that contain the wires.
One has the colours RED, ORANGE, BROWN
This is the one we will be using so the other one can go back into the ignition barrel slot.

Now you've got your wires, it should look like this:
IMG_0151.JPG

You will be doing the following to the RED and BROWN wires. The orange one should be left.
What you have to do with these is remove the black sticky insulating tape thing and go an inch up from the bottom of the wire. Strip the wire with the strippers. 2 inches should be enough so you have part of the wire exposed. Its quite tricky and it took me an hour to pluck up the courage to do it but its not all that hard.
If worst comes to worst and you rip or cut the wires off the box you can link these to the button. This only means you will not be able to turn the key to turn on the car, and will just be the button.

Step Four: Fiddling with the Button
This is the easiest part really. Cut the wire into two and strip all four ends off the wire. Make sure you twist the end of the wire so its nice and tight. Connect these to the button using a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the screw from the button and slot the copper wire into it.
Picture below of how mine turned out:

Next thread it through the hole left by the lighter (Note: you dont have to thread it through the actual dashboard panel again, just where the hole would be and where the cigarette lighter wires were)

You should have the button in place by now and have the ends of the wire like this. Make sure you twist them again! (Note that I didnt trim or strip the wires in this pic, Sorry ;)):

Step Five: Connecting the wires together
Ok, this is quite simple if you know what your doing.
It doesnt matter which ignition wires connect to which button wires aslong as they are connected properly.
Got these pictures from an external site which really helped me understand how to wire them.

Firstly use your toothpick to prize open the wires to look like this:

Then thread the button wire through the middle of them like this:
14.gif

Twist them together. I pressed mine but make sure they wont slip out when you let go of them. They should look something like this:
15.gif

Finally use your electrical tape to hold the connection. You dont need much, but make sure your wires dont slip out or whatever. Should look something like this:
18.gif

Repeat for the other wire and you should have your connection! :D

You can at this point, try the connection by reconnecting the battery. Turn your key so all the electrics come on and press the button! (Hopefully it works :D)

Step Six: Put it all back together!
Fit your Dash and other panels back in. Luckily I had a bit of the button that was larger than the hole left by the cigarette lighter and managed to super-glue the edge and stick it on. You may have to hold it in place some other way if you have a different button.

And there you have it! Should by now have an Engine Push Start Button!

Good luck with it :D(y)
