Hi folks,

I am currently experiencing yet another problem with my Fiat Punto 75 mk1.

When I start the car with cold engine revs go up to 2000 rpm and then right after so low (about 500 rpm) that the engine dies. If I start the car and right away accelerate keeping the revs between 1500-2000 for a couple of minutes then it will idle OK.

Occasionally the injection warning light switches ON after sometime driving, I don't have a clue if this is caused by the same root problem. My fuel consumption is also rather high, mix driving about 34mpg.

Has anyone experienced something similar?

So far I have replaced both lambda and coolant temperature sensor and it did not make any difference, any suggestion?

Thanks in advance!

Hmm strange one, i would have put it down to being the coolant temperature sensor, if the car is cold started the butterfly valve assumes a position that is based on the coolant temp sensors reading (and battery voltage oddly enough). This change in position will effectively do the same as an idle speed control valve on other cars, if the temp sensor was faulty the butterfly valve would not adjust its position and cold idle problems would occur, similarly if the actuator that adjusts the butterfly valve position was faulty cold idle problems would occur also, if i had to take a guess the idle problem is due to a fault in the throttle body..

PS: Have you tryed resetting your ECU i would try that first by disconnecting the battery overnight..

Thanks for your replies guys.

I will disconnect the battery tonight, hopefully resetting the ECU helps, thanks for the tip.

About the temperature, it is OK, I am not having any problem with it.

Cheers,

Having just posted a similar problem I'll try the battery disconnect & see if it has any effect.

Thanks Punto.Power, resetting the ECU did actually fix the problem! (y)
I will now check the fuel consumption, hopefully it also gets better (or perhaps this car is just pretty thirsty for such an small engine).

Cheers,

No problem glad to help, your fuel consumption maybe a little high at the momeant as your body computer is re-learning everything and adjusting to the way you drive, takes around 200-300miles before it sets..

It may actually be that the battery is nakard. I had a problem with my mk2 not starting well on cold days.it was just that i needed a replacement battery. However with view to your revs it may be that your automatic choke is't working properly.this happend with my dads car.when it was started up the revs would immediatly drop very low and then the engine would cut out.by pressing the accellerator the car would get going and would be fine after a few minutes driving.
