...Hello chaps! After sapping some of your wisdom if i may, I have a 1.2 8v punto, year 2000 with 91,000 on the clock. I started getting problems with heavy oil consumption, at first i thought it would be a problem with the valve stem oil seals, however, i have noticed the lil bugger is spewing neat oil out of the exhaust  , also when i put my hand inside the tail pipe it is full of oil :( . So.... would i be right in thinking that there is a problem with the piston rings/worn bore? New block time?? Is this whats called oil blow by, right?.

Any help appreciated,

keith :)

Oil in the exhaust would normally indicate worn piston rings or valve seals or too much oil in the engine, if its nackerd up valve seals which will allow the oil to flow through as well. and also rubbed and farked up piston rings will allow the oil to get in your cylinder and if there is too much oil in there it wont burn and be straight kicked out of the exhaust section and all the way back to your tail pipe, if its your valve seals, then youd need to replace them all and I wont think you need to take the whole head out, can just take the cover off and do it from there as far as I know, when you start the car does it (blow blue smoke on startup)

Yeah it blue smokes when its cold, but only if you rev it or accelerate off quite fast from initial start up then yeah it leaves a blue cloud. lol

The valve seals a big job then?

Thanks :)

Yeah m8 some mechanics would just say your better off recon the whole thing and some just do as you say, you want the valve seals changed only, but if it was only on start up with the blue smoke it would be the seals if your getting it constantly that would be your piston rings mate.
