I have a MK2 punto sporting in the Calypso Orange colour or whatever it is suppose to be...I cant really afford to go out and buy some new top of the range mirrors so am thinking of spraying them the same colour as the car......

Is there any specialist paint that I need as I know the mirrors are some form of plastic...

Love my punto, love my music, shame about the life!!

One tip, leave this sort of thing to the pros, go down to local fiat place and ask if they could help you out, can spray always comes out crap, and the ammount youll have to spend on paint and lacker and time and effort, it just aint worth it! Im sure they would spray them up for a few quid!

Good luck

not exactly true, i've seen show cars that were painted with cans. if you prime and sand the casing properly and spend time on preperation, you'll get a good finish. any monkey can spray paint. it takes a clever one to get the surface right. remember any imperfection will multiply once paint is applied. Don't paint the flexible rubber bit on the mirror and use special plastic primer

Met Cognac 99 Brava 100 HSX,

I'd tend to side with Mr Chunk on this one. I'm involved with painting plastic bits for a living - you need the correct prep, primer and paint.

The paint should be a 2 Pack - i.e Paint, Catalyst and Thinners mixed together - the Catalyst makes the paint go hard, the thinners thins it out so that it sprays out OK.

Unless you have suitabel spraying equipment, the finish will never be as good as the professional will get it.

Also, decent paint shops will mix the paint themselves on a "Weight Mix System" and match to the specific batch of Calypso Orange Paint that your car was sprayed with at the factory.

Also - remeber that Paint chips when stones hit it. Black Plastic doesn't...

... your call...

Here come da judge...

you can get ok results with cans, plastik primer and double acrylic top coat.

i have done my bumpers and i am about to d omy mirrors as soon as i get a nice day off!! i used plastic primer (3 coats) the colour (3 coats) and a laquer (2 coats) and now it looks the busness yes granted it is not as smooth as the colour coded bumpers but it is still smooth to touch and if you look at it you would think it is suposed to be like that!!

My bumpers have been sprayed (rosso red, non-metallic) and they look fine, difficult to tell they were done by can-spraypaint. I am thinking about doing the mirrors but have two things to think about, 1. how the hell do you get the mirrors off (if anyone knows, please explain) and 2. wether it would look crap, I have seen one mk1 with sprayed mirrors and it didnt look great. My advice is tho, professional spraying is expensive, and unless you're getting the whole car or a large proportion of it sprayed, do it yourself. I have done plenty of jobs on mine (sprayed bumpers, removed and smoothed all those rubbing strips on the side, debadged and smoothed) hich at first I thought would be very hard and take ages, yes they did take ages, but no it wasnt too hard. Just remember with spraying like everyone has said, take your time. To be honest though, If calypso orange is the colour Im thinking of, it's a metallic paint so I guess this will be a lot more difficult to get a good finish from, I could be wrong, also, although not always immediately noticeable, the body colour will probably have faded from new, so may be slightly different to the can spray. Sorry for this huge post, but I just like to encourage people to do their own work because it's cheaper, and very rewarding when you finish and it looks great.

well overall i have done over a dozen differant car trims bumpers, mirrors or anthing else tacky plastic and it is all in prep and patients!! if you do it properly it will look good!! and make sure you use hte right primer other wise it will look crap and flake!!
