My Punto's original gearbox was always a cow to get into first (it broke last year, unrelated to the shift; the final drive went and only turned one wheel [xx(]).
I fitted another 'box from a scrap car which feels exactly the same, i.e. hard to engage first gear. As far as I know it's a common fault - in fact, if you find a Mk1 Punto 55/60 with a decent shift into 1st, it's probably faulty!! :p

On my Italian market 1996. Punto 55 SX there is a cable for the clutch. I could post a pic if you're interested. It could be that the newer models, or models with diferent engines, have hydraulic, but this is a nice wire, with a funny plastic screw for ragulating tension.

Re: sometimes hard to get in 1st and 2nd gear

Found this from website:---
Technical Issue: MK1 difficult 1st and 2nd gear engagement

A manual gearbox after 100,000km of abuse showed its sign of worn out. Normal gearbox lubricant can no longer adhere enough amount of oil to the synchronizer, therefore making dog teeth difficult to slide over each other, thus a difficult gear engagement.
As this happened to both cold and after warm up situation, it is so annoying that this problem must be fixed. But an overhaul gearbox is costly, option is to replace the lubricant with OBERON : F808 80W-90.
After that, customer found not only smooth 1st and 2nd gear engagement but also quieter cruising at 100km/hr and less vibration from the gear lever.
