I have a 2002 1.2 Punto and have have a few problems that need solving.

1. Indicators. Cannot stay on for any length of time on roundabouts, click off at the wrong moment and I sometimes have to hold them on. Mechanics at Fiat dealer tested them and said it was 'normal'.

2. Handbrake, the handbrake doesn't always go fully down, as if there is something obstructing it and the warning light stays on.

3. Windscreen wiper judder on intermittent speed. Cleaned
windscreen, swapped blades, both failed to eliminate problem.

And lastly, I want to remove the existing factory fitted stereo and replace it. How would I go about doing so?

Answers to any of the above would be welcomed.

Cheers

Matt

windscreen wiper judder. Same thing on mine - replaced blades but still a problem. This is a fiat thing. Intend to get this done on warranty soon.

cheers

Indicators is unfortunately just another Fiat thing. I've removed a key part of the self cancelling mechanism on my cinq so I have to turn them off myself. It's a bit odd until you get used to it, but a whole lot better than having to put them on three times just to exit a roundabout.

When you changed the wipers, did you change just the rubber blade or the whole end? if there is wear and movement in the connections it could cause the problem. Have you tried genuine Fiat wipers?

Pete.

I replaced the entire blades. I mentioned it a friend who said you can get it on all cars but surely it should'nt be a problem after replacing the blades. Sounds like something for the warranty.

Any help with removing the stereo?

Cheers

I had something like this on mine, but it wasn't that bad. Sometimes I'd notice it had come up and the warning light was on. During the first service they adjusted it and it's been fine since...

I've got used to the indicators - there are a few bits of road I know that wont auto-cancel, so a bit of a strage one there! My wipers sometimes judder a little, but it doesn't bother me. I get some whitish marks, but a quick spray of water sorts it out.

I notice the new Active's now have body coloured bumpers - confused me a great deal seeing one - was it an active (holed headrests) or dynamic/ELX (bumpers)...

I have got a Punto ELX 8V 2000 ,got it 6 months ago and the wipers used to judder on mine it wasnt like a judder from the wiper blades thought was as if the wiper motor wasnt working properly took it back to the dealer dont know what they did but hasnt done it since

Mk1 Punto has the same problem. Its a Fiat thing, although I would have thought they would have fixed this on the new Punto. Mine even make a kind of beeping noise!

Don't know about this. A garage should ba able to adjust the handbrake cable, etc which might help.

I've heard that this is a Punto problem although I've never had a problem with my Mk1, only when the windscreen has been dry! Doh! The only problem I have with my wipers is when I'm driving at speed, they fail to clear very much of the rain on the screen. I'd read the replies above...I think it can be repaired by FIAT.

You need a replacement face plate for your dashboard. You can get these from places like Halfords/Ripspeed, although any Fiat garage will be able to sell you one too. Your current stero should then pull out, possibly with the use of batons that will fit in holdes either side of your stereo. Pull out the stereo and disconnect from the wiring. try fitting your new stereo to the cables. If the connections are all wrong, you can buy ISO kits from Halfords/Ripspeed which act as a go between, between the cars cables and the connectors on your stereo.

My Mk1 Punto didn't need the additional connector, but I think its all dependent on the stereo.

Hope this helps!

My mk2 punto jtd had the wiper problem - not just on intermittent, either!

Bostons at Stafford had heard about the problem in a Fiat tech report and replaced the wiper motor under warranty on the 12,000 mile service which cured it - for about a month...

I also had a very annoying rattle coming from around the stereo/glovebox area - apparently the ECU was bouncing around on the scuttle... they said they'd ask Fiat what to do and phone me when they got an answer. Fiat didn't have an answer and I didn't get a call.

When I complained about both problems on the 24,000 mile service they looked at it again but it still wasn't right. And still the rattle. They'd taken pictures to send to Fiat - apparently my Punto was the only one with the problem in the country and they weren't sure what to do about it. Well, I always knew my car was special...

By the time the 36,000 mile service came up I was fuming. I was told that they would need my car for two days to strip the ECU out, strengthen the mounting area and rebuild it. Also, Fiat don't recommend replacing the wiper motors now (they were losing too many) -they suggested applying "some special white grease" - the service department's description, not mine.

I pointed out that as both problems had been identified at the 12,000 mile service, but not cured, I didn't expect to have to pay anything -after checking with Fiat they said it would be done under warranty. Well, guess what... it all worked. My Punto's done 46,000 miles now and hasn't had a rattle or any wiper problems since they applied the grease.

The moral of this story? Make sure you identify any problems or gripes at the 12,000 mile/warranty service - if they don't fix them for good you can browbeat 'em into fixing it later... especially if you discuss your current problems in a showroom full of punters! (Bostons were great, actually - no real arguments, though the service manager does take a pill now when he sees me walk in the door...).

Now if I can just sort out the slipping cluch...

Hi.....the juddering wipers is now known to be caused by the grease in the wiper motor solidifying....this can now be changed under warranty (provided you still have warranty) Mine do it only on intermittent and if I give it a whirl on the next notch down for a minute, this frees up the grease and I can go back to the slower speeds....will get it done though before the warranty runs out:D.......

As the car is turning to the right, going round a roundabout and you want to indicate to come off (left) then the self cancelling gear is going to cancel your signal......sounds reasonable to me! I just hold the lever till the car has come off the right turn....

Don't know about the hand brake, but you are lucky not to have misting headlights;) No problem there then? I had mine modified with a new backplate ...OK now.

See yah...Derek:):):)

If you want to remove the Factory fitted stereo from a mk2 punto u need to purchase a couple of removing pins, these can be found at a local halfords priced at about 2-3pounds.

Once youve taken that huge stereo your left with a big gaping hole, you then need to purchase a face adapter to reduce the size to the standard size for most aftermarket headunits.

Fiat Punto 99'on

Stereo Wiring
No wiring adaptor needed for this car.

Facia
To replace the factory fitted stereo you will require FP-01-04 facia adaptor

Speakers
Front - 17cm located in the front door
Rear - 10cm located under the parcel shelf side supports

(FOR THOSE WHO HAVE PRE-2000 PUNTOS)

2. Handbrake, the handbrake doesn't always go fully down, as if there is something obstructing it and the warning light stays on.

I don't know the truth about it but it's been told me that while you push the the brake pedal all the way down and pull up your handbrake it will adjust the handbrake cable... well try it, there's nothing to loose! :D

To improve wipers clean any traves of wash n wax of windscreen and wipers with washing up liquid and the green bit of washing up sponge then put some vinagar in the screen wash bottle with water don't use any screen wash this usally improves visability 100% in heavy rain, also the vinagar stops water jets from getting blocked.

if your hand brake light stays on this could mean that the shoes are in contact with the brake drum.

to check this drive half a mile or so, poke your finger through the holes in the rear wheels, and touch the drum, it should be cool to the touch, if it's warm or hot adjust your handbrake cable.

do this asap as the heat can damage wheel bearings and brake cylinders.

I have the same thing with the indicators but It seems to be something to put up with.

As for the Stereo I Just bought and Ipod with an Itrip and some new speakers. The Sound is really good.
