Hello All,

This forum seems excellent - i have just bought a 2002 Punto Sporting Speedgear and unfortunately am having some problems 1 day after purchase from private seller, one of which is erratic idling which didn't happen on 40miles return trip from purchase, but the next trip out and it is very jumpey when ticking over - guessingtry sparks, ht leads, coil packs from my readings on other threads.

I am just wondering at the moment if i should expect a whining or whiring noise from an engine component when it is in full ignition or MAR level but not yet had the engine started. The component making the noise is located to the right of the main engine cover, it has two cable looms going into the top of it - can anyone tell me what it is?

Then can anyone tell me if it should make a constant fairly high pitched noise which after a couple of minutes changes to a higher pitch followed by a clicking noise before returning to the previous sound. All this occures before the engine is started.

Is this normal?

Thanks in advance

To update my query -

Now i have a workshop manual for the car i can tell you the whining noise is coming from the ECU.

Can anyone tell me if anoticable noise comes from their ECU with the ignitionkey turned to MAR - helps if bonet is open.

The noise is high pitched, gets higher then followed by a click like something is moving.

I get this too. It comes from the little electric motor that moves the butterfly in the throttle body (which is underneath the ecu). It is behind a black plastic cover. I dont know if it is normal or not though?? It is a high pitched and a very random noise.

Another noise I get is the fuel pump in the fuel tank - a loud hissing noise that is on and off all the time - can be heard whilst idling.
