hey.. just bought a waterproof colour camera from ebay... wanna connect it up to my in-dash dvd player. dont really know about cars, but got a hole a little to the right of my back numberplate, that has a removable cap on. Would it be a gud idea to fit the camera there?

Also, how would i get the cables inside the car, so i could connect to head unit..

Thanks!

reversing cameras usually point about 45 degrees to the road, not stright out, so that you can see how close you are getting bumper to bumper

so i would mount it inside the hollowed out bit under the bit that goes above the number plate, this should mean you can mount it central. As you dont want to mount it off to one side, as that will make it harder to gauge distances! also, too low and you wont see anything for long!

OEM ones are mounted in similar places, unler the grab handle, just above the number plate

wires, would mean drilling a hole into the boot lid, and then id trace them from the inside of the bootlid, up the side of the rear window, and than along the hinge. From there you could go down one of the pillars to the floor

Personally, id trace it along inside the head lining, and down the A pillar, then behind the dashboard. Means you wont see any wires anywhere! :D

But then, i wouldnt bother seems a lot of trouble for something that isnt needed :chin:

Im fitting one to my civic., just for the hell of it because i have a motorized 7in headunit with a camera output and them cameras cost next to nothing these days.,., youll need to mount it high up in the rear window in order to see anything and because the punto is a hatch you will have good visibilty.,..,

That is indeed the most inane addition to a compact car. I assume you will be looking at the dash as opposed to the rearview mirror when reversing. LOL, it takes all sorts..:p

Well my car isnt exactly compact, my rear window is fairly high and you cant really see much through it so it would be handy incase theres a small ballard or a child behind the car, and for the money theres worse things you could get for your car.,
And yes you would look at the screen aswell as the rearview because the image is flipped so as to show you behind in the same orientation as the mirror only you can see more than the mirror., anything that improves safety and is cheap is worth a go if you ask me.,.,

Surely the rear visibility isn't that bad that you would miss a child or a bollard.. The rear view mirror isn't for reversing, it's for seeing behind you when driving forward. You're supposed to turn your head and look backwards. You would fail your driving test if you performed your manuvers using only the mirrors and a screen on the dash. IMHO it's a backwards step in safety. Cameras only have a limited field of view.. then you're shrinking it onto a 7" screen.

If you think it's long enough to warrant this dangerous distraction, try driving something bigger - like a Marea weekend.. Then you'll realise how short the Punto is!

Well i dont drive a punto i have a civic 04 and although its not a limo the rear window is pretty high up compared to other cars, and i know you dont reverse with just the mirror but if you already have a screen in the car then whats the harm in installing a camera, there only 20quid on ebay and people spend way more than that on induction kits for 8valve punto's' which have no real benifit to the cars performance of sound.,. If they were expencive i wouldnt bother but seeing as they are cheap,.,.

Havent really got a reason for putting it on.. i just wanna do it tho! i dont wanna drill any holes in my car, would it do any harm if i place it in the towing eye then?

Yeah, baught mine for £17 including deliv, from ebay.. its got infra-red too.

the towing eye is FAR too low to be any use, it needs to be angled down so you can see a wide range, not just behind you.

It is essentially a useless mod but you can do sum fun things with it if u put ur mind to it. Im thinking of strategically placin cameras round the car linking it to laptop so i can send the video over the internet then if sum t**t nicks the car i can see everything and theyll be all over the net. Essentially useless but it will be fun to completly screw over the clever c**t who tries to nick ma car.

You're quite wrong here.
When learning reverse manoeuvres you're now taught to use all the mirrors including rear view mirror rather than turning around in your seat.

I think you might find that when I posted that comment in 2007, I was quite correct.

Backwards step IMHO if people are reversing only using mirrors. Some people are simple unable to comprehend distances and directions in mirrors.
