my car failed its mot yesterday and the previous mot certificate run out on the 6th feb. Under the new mot laws can i still drive it up until this date.
Also does any one know of any websites that sell cheap parts for Punto Mk1 90 ELX.
All help will be appreciated.

Police legislation states that you must not drive a car with no MOT, if it is the 6th feb you can drive it up to the date - there after you can only drive it directly to a MOT test station (with proof of appointment) - if you get caught going elsewhere (or even parking up on the way there) you can be fined.

Cheers for that. It's what i thought. Some bloke i know kept telling me i cudnt due to the new mot system. Neva mind. Cheers Again.

Wrong - under the new system your car is now registered as a failure and as such the current certificate is invalid. On the old 'book' system you could get away with it but under the new computerised logging system you can't.

The same thing happened with my bike a while back.

It's illegal to drive on the road without an MOT unless you are driving to an MOT station with an appointment already made. However it won't invalidate your insurance provided your car is roadworthy. However, given it's failed the MOT, you would have to prove the work had been completed to the insurance company to validate a claim if you needed to make one.

However, if an accident was caused by or contributed to by the defects, you're then driving without insurance plus an MOT. Grab your ankles!!

I know that when my Astra failed last September that the garage told me that I was OK to drive until the previous test expired. Drove the car far about three weeks (still under the previous MOT) until I got my Punto.

Looking at this discussion http://www.motester.co.uk/forums/forum4/55.html
it seems a bit of grey area. Just to be safe I would get the work done as soon as I could if possible.

Mot certs aren't the hardest thing in the world to obtain if you did get pulled(y)

The thing is that your car has to be roadworthy at all times. Were you to have an accident the car is now centrally logged as being unroadworthy. At the very best you'd end up with a huge argument about whether the MOT failure was contributary to the accident. If the failure was safety related you definitely shouldn't drive it.

The basic thing to remember is that the MOT test is a snapshot of a given moment in time. Cars should be capable of passing the test any time, the police can and do carry out roadside checks, arguing "well my tyres/brakes/balljoints were ok when it was MOT'd and that still has x months to run" won't cut it.
