Hello.

Car has been of the road now for a few months and I have been looking around the Internet for other people that have had the same problems as me. I seam pretty common problem and just wanted to know the best way around this. So here is goes

I came along when I was driving down a road near me to go to work and suddenly lost all power and just felt like it was really struggling and had no pulling power at all. Also the engine movement light had also come on.

Had a look at it for a while and didn’t have a clue.

Took it to a local garage later that week or 2, and he had a look at it, tested the coils sparkplugs and them little things Went back few days later and he said he thinks that it is the ECU. Also said only 2 cylinders were running so this had to pull the other 2 round manually.

I then came on here and other places and lots of people had the same problem as me and got new ECU for 300-600 GBP. Phoned Fiat and they said 450+VAT+fitting, also tried Fiat specialist garage and he said he knows what the problem is and that he can get second-hand ECU keys locks and key barrel for around 300+VAT.

There is a salvage yard near me with quite a lot of punto’s which is quite worrying, so I got an ECU out of there and placed this in mine, and didn’t work. Also tried phoning around to see if I can get a second-hand ECU recoded, apparently not.

So now I am thinking if I get the keys, locks and ignition barrel and fit this as well as the ECU from the same car as the keys will this work or will I have to do something else.

Please help if you can.

Thanks for your time in advance

Easy way, buy a Mkcritch chip - do a forum search - this bypasses the immobaliser - fit it in the ecu you bought from the scrappies. Job done.

By the way I had a similar problem recently, everything pointed to electrics turned out to be head gasket.

O nice just been reading up on them on here. So do they go in the ECU or connect to it and its just bypasses the immobaliser. Also would i be able to fit one.

Just where do i get one of these from and how much. Couldent find this out in the search sorry

Thanks

What do you think would be the best thing to get.

Then lock set keys and ecu. Second hand.

Or secondhand ecu and this Mkcritch chip

MIght try the key set and ecu cos i can get this easily and dont know how to get the Mkcritch chip

PM him to see if it would work in my car, said no :( so back to the drawing board.

will work as long as its not a 75 MPI (havnt read previous posts  )

You need, the ECU, igntion barrel and code box in the fuse box to the right of the steerign wheel and down to make the new one respond to the Red key to match the ECU your putting in, as well as obviously the blue key. Also the coil packs are to the right of your rocker cover (top of the engine that has the oil filler cap bit in) they're black, theres two of them and your spark plug/HT leads run into them

doesn't sound like the ecu. Sounds like one of the coils to me (i have had a coil failure before so i can sympathise).

Only £35 from a motorfactor and 10 mins to diy fit it. Piece of cake. Try that before commiting yourself to a new ecu.

yer its a 2002 mk2. I’ve had the coils replaces and looked at when it was in the garage. mcritch has said that he doesn’t do the chip for my car because it an mpi and not a spi. Going to get the barrel, keys, ecu and lock set out of a car later on today.
Will i need the immobiliser, if so where is this?
Is the key locks easy to fit as well or pain in the back side

Thanks
