I was looking at buying a GT punto from a friend of a friend who's selling it quite cheap because it apparently has low compression in one of the cylinders. I don't mind buying a car that needs a bit of engine work done if the price is right but was just wondering what would be causing low compression and what sort of prices would be involved fixing the problem.

GT engines are good when they are running, but most at this stage in their lives need a full rebuild and overhall (defanatly including that gearbox, better sooner than later, else you'll regret it).

Factor in the cost of such a rebuild when buying the car (I WOULD NOT buy a GT this many years down the line without FIRM evidense its been rebuilt in the last 10-12k by somone who can weild a spanner).

i had full engine rebuilt on my gt3 T plate and that was about 2k in the end.

i got a second hand head of the puntosportsclubs for £200 and that got fitted.

i done 2rings and new afm lamda the lot mate and that was 2k my compression was 110 in each hole, it needs to be around 150 mate.
if the gt is nice and you think you can get your money back y not do it.

i have a gt1 engine in my garage if you need parts of it like rings and gearbox.
can sell it cheap mate

Depends on whats wrong with it, could be a number of things, a compression test will give you a more of a rough idea but you still wont know the full story untill its totally stripped down.

Could be anything from a few hundred to a few thousand.

Also depends on how much your getting the car for.
