hey guys n girls ages ago i put up a post saying that i go drag racing with a couple o mates n that 1 friend who wz very cocky said he would hav ne punto in his mk3 1.4 golf so wz gunna race him.then he crashed his car so looked like it was off. so any way to cut along story short he got damage repaired n we wer cruzin down the m6 toll n had a race out of the toll booths and hell yeah baby the look on his face as my punto 1.1 kept up inch for inch wid his golf it was pricless. felt sorry for my engine tho as hit rev limitler in 2nd n got a nasty smell. the main point is tho shame on him hes never said another word about it being slow n crap.

Had the same sort of friends one with a 1.4SR Nova and other has a Clio 1.4, smoked the both of them at Edzell on Sunday, Wasnt even close, beat em by a good few car lengths, Look on thier faces were priceless, Truley a master card moment, Oh btw my cars a 1.2SX

So you claim your 55 HP car with a 0-60 of 15.5 or 16.0 seconds depending on model with a top speed of 93 beat a car with 14.7 seconds 0-60 and a top speed of 106 (the 1.4 is by far the slowest gold!) in a drag? Sounds like he wasn't thrashing his as much as you did!
Not far off though, in terms of acceleration a 1.4 golf is similar to a 1.1 punto but the golf can go to a much higher top speed.

Smoked a V plate Golf GTi yesterday up the M80....I moved into the fast lane right behind the black golf...he dropped a gear and you could see the back end drop as he accelerated....but.....i sat on his back and he could not get away from me all the way up to about 100mph....we then had to slow down for the main roundabout that takes you onto the A80....he pulled into the 'slow' lane and booted it and I moved past him surprisingly quickly.

I think he was surprised 'cos a Punto HGT from the front just looks like any standard Punto...what a mistake on his part...I love my HGT [8D]

Had a run-in with VR6 4Motion going to Greenock on Saturday..on the M8/A8....to be honest he pulled out to try and overtake and he couldnt gain on me until about 110...and even then it wasn't that much faster....heavt f*ckers these golfs I tell ya.

The 1.4 Golf is an incredibly sluggish machine. The early-to-mid-90's models had a poxy 60bhp, which is fine for a small light Punto but no use in the Golf, which is a heavy tank of a car. Hence you could probably waste a 1.4 Golf in an old Panda 750
Plus, FIATs in general are bloody quick for their engine sizes!

The 1.2 Stilo is 80bhp tho, and has 6-speed box to help it

Not that road racing should be encouraged in anyway, I left a Golf 2.0GTi for dead (upto the speed limit!!!) not long after I got my Stilo

thats rubish man there fiat statistics + "my 55bhp car" is far from standard. iv had my little punto up to 100 and 110 if u get bit downward slope.yeah we came out the toll gates real slow then counted down e.g. wid fingers u no 3 2 1 n my punto stuck wid it no mor than a foot between them. golfs are heavy f**kers.both slowed down bout same time n the look on his face was classic cz he ws so amazed he didnt waste me. n to add insult to injury i had his old 17" wheels on n he had 16" so prob wld av got infront if had standard wheels.

What engine mods do you have?

Remember tho, your clock speed isn't exactly accurate, any error is proportional, not zero drift, so the higher it reads the further it is out. Not saying your car won't do them speeds, but the only way to tell accurately is with radar equipment, or a good quality calibrated speedo.

k&n full power flow exhaust up 2 manifold. its got other stuff on it but nothin make speed diffrence body kit lowered 40mm soon 60.i gt 110 out of it when i had my old 15" alloy wheels on it.same wid the new puntos they say top speed 95 but can get up 2 110-115.yeah i hear wot ur sayin epesially cz iv got 17's on it now but i heard that the dif is only like a couple mph out n hardly noticable. will av to find out hopfull not thru radar (police radar.)

Hmmm dunno about these figures Paul....Punto HGT is capable easily of 127 possibly more. Also, there are different variants of Golf GTi..i think they range from 115bhp upto 150bhp (bearing in mind that these Golfs weigh about the same as big pop idol Michelle) they should not be a match for 130bhp punto in any variant.

Another thing...on the motorway (err sorry, I meant on my private track ) we started at about 50mph upwards..so 0-60 doesnt really come into it. So it would be interesting to see the stats for say 50-90 between the two cars. I thought the Golf GTi was around 10 secs to 60 anyway?? maybe I was wrong.

I agree about the VR6...possibly he didnt drop a gear when i did..and i was redlining the engine...however when I owned my Fiat Coupe 20vt i had the greatest of pleasure destroying one of these VR6 jobbies so i still had a smile on my face as he passed me [^]

I tell you a car I stuggled against was the Seat Ibiza TDi 130...jesus I had problems on the motorway..what kind of torque do these things have. Saying that I was still in 5th gear when he was on my arse and i didnt drop it to 4th so maybe would have been a diff story.

BigStu, the TDi 130 is a bit of a beast, my mates has a lardy golf with it in and thats quick (quicker than my Stilo), so the Ibiza must be a stormer! One other thing about TD's is the tuning potential, I fancy getting remapped eventually, not that I race around much, just for the odd occassion

I nearly got an HGT actually, the new diesel one tho, but I didn't have to wait so long for my Stilo and I was swayed by having a bit more 'big car comfort', plus its cheaper on the insurance, the Punto is still gorgeous tho, shame I can't afford both[!] Do you find with having a 'performance badge' on the back you get all the dickheeds in Nova's etc trying it on all the time?

I used to drive some nice company cars, I used to get losers reving up to me all the time, me in, say a Saab 9-3 turbo, kev in an Escort 55 van for example

Bodd, its a MK2 HGT I have....I believe the GT MK1 is actually quicker than the HGT.

JamesM, yup I do get the cold hatch brigade trying it on....the only 'fast' hatch that has raced me was the VR6...90% of the time I dont race....I need my car for my work so dont want to kill it ;-)

Its weird cos when I had my Fiat Coupe turbo I had the subaru's, Civic Type R's, Audi TTs (boy did I love smokin' them) all trying it on..but no Nova's etc.

I do think that insurance group 15 for the HGT is a lot of pish though....I have full no claims...no convictions....30 years old and pay £550.....if I had bought the Sporting version it would have been half that for a car that almost looks identical.

One thing I would say is that if you drive quite low miles a year..and are prepared to put aside a bit of money every year..you will not get better that the Coupe 20valve turbo for the money..the straight line speed in them is astounding.
