I nearly ran out of petrol tonight and shuddered and shaked into the garage, i then filled up and it is still shuddering and splurting, is this because the fuel lines are full of air pockets or have i caused some major damage

Well i decided to take it to a garage and they replaced the Coil Pack but it worked fine for about 1 hour and then it packed up on me and wont go above 30 mph, i have got a Fiat punto 1.4 P Reg

It may be crud from the bottom of the fuel tank in the pipes or blocking a filter. Another candidate is water, this can accumulate at the bottom of the tank, condensation inside the tank or small amounts in the pterol. Its heavier than water and usually the pick up ignores it.
It's a good idea to never go below 1/4 full, I realise the words horse stable door bolted etc apply in your case.

Thanks for your help, how can i go about fixing it, as soon as a new coil pack is put in it works for a bit and then dies on me, is something making the coil pack die

coil packs should have NOTHING to do with fueling and running it low, no idea why they have decided to change them

changing fuel filter and flushing the fuel system properly would have been a better usage of money.

coil packs are to build up the charge to make the spark plugs spark.

But when he changed the coil pack it worked but only for about an hour

Why was that then?

Thanks for all your help guys

I assume you live in Leicester or the county from your name, if that's the case then talk to Interservices on Vulcan Way Leicester. They are an Alfa / Fiat specialist with years of experience on Italian cars. It's were I go for all servicing repair work. They should know what the problem is.

maybe just extreme coincidence that the coil packs went at same time as you running the tank dry.

The car went back this morning and they got another coil pack from a different supplier and we then went for a drivee around leicester and fingers crossed no problems.

It must have been a weird coincidence which has been bugging me all day but the bloke said the car was mis firing and that had nothing to do with the fuel mistake the other night

also no extra charge
