General Avon tyres, shocking!

I got some 15" abarth alloys and they came with Avon tyres on which I thought was an alright make, how wrong was I there absolute sh**e. In the dry there not too bad but in the wet there lethal, for instance if i put my foot down in third gear or below accelerating onto a motorway they grip fine untill 4k rpm when they just spin up! (pressures are fine, good tread depth). The rear tyres are auraura which i've never heard of tbh.

Anyone got any recommendations as I get some shocked looks and one fella asked me what lump I had dropped into it.:slayer:

Wouldint they be on the right way though if they came with on it.. There probly a low budget tyre that are crap..

Youd think so wouldnt you? but national tyres once put one on the wrong way for me!

There definately the right way round, I don't know if they do decent tyres in a 15" size, last tyres I brought were for the old 17" alloys I had.

I used to have some Pirelli P6000's that acted pretty much the same way while as your Avons while accelerating in the wet. It's easy to wheelspin in 3rd in the HGT and particulary if it's got a few added horses. I'd recommend trying some top of the range Michelin, Continental or Goodyears, though i have marshall power racing 2's on mine at the moment and the less said about them the better :spin: but i haven't crashed as yet. :devil:

its been a wet day, the first for a while, so there'll have been plenty of road gunk and oil worked into the road, after a few days of rain the roads get better (water washs all the nasty off).
got to say a mod'd hgt is gonna struggle putting its power down (around a bend I can get my 74bhp punto to spin in 3rd with my 14" sporting alloys on, with 13" x155, no problem grip fine).
they could be older tyres, i.e never been used, but lying around a while, and gone hard (takes years mind).
or they could just need the outer layer worn off (200miles hard driving:devil: ) .

I got a pair of marangoni's fitted to my polo when i had that, (145 profile tyres), and went from handling like a dream either wet or dry, to being an absolutre pile of understeering, poo I didn't go out in the wet as they were actually deadly (i.e brake normally from 40mph and they would lock, they would slide around bends (gentile town bends) and generally poo.
took the car back to the tyre spot, who admitted they were not a great tyre, and wouldn't normally have used them (been there a few years collecting dust!!) so offered me a pair of goodyear Gt1 (?)'s instead, and they were fab.

Got 'year Gt2's fitted all round on the 13" steelies (the 14" alloys handle like poo, the car just understeers into everything:yuck: ) and the cars much better! wet especially!!

I know the alloys were'nt used for about a year, I did'nt know tyres go hard over time though, i'll enquire about a set of goodyears.

the goodyears are good, for larger wheels (15"+) they are called gt3's and are about £36 PC upwards depending on size.
there are still much better tyres out there though, toyo proxes 304's (no idea, some weird number?) are rated pretty much the best of the best.
also goodyear EAGLE F1's are highly reputed (very very good) for 15" they are something like £70 PC on the highstreet, mytyres.co.uk did them for my friend, 4x F1's for a new Mr2 on 15's for like £45 a corner, which is just ridicolously cheap (half price ). you won't get any better than that, unless your buying part used racing tyres on teh back end of a trackday

if you just want a cheap set then federal seem ok ... not great to look at but are fine and cheap ... u can get a 13" tyre for £13

It might just be you expect to much? handling will tend to be quite different in wet, whatever the tyre.

I made sure, i got Yokohama A539's on mine, stick like s**t to a blanket. I had some cheap tyres on my old alloys, and i always spun it on roundabouts in the wet. and also i have seen too many accidents which involved cheap tyres. i prefer to be safe than anything else.

Look up Hankook, they are meant to be pretty decent, and fairly priced from what I understand.

mine are the same, not too bad in dry but they do spin comin off roundabouts in 2nd gear, and in the rain...well skating and ice spring to mind..
but they are cheap an nasty ones called goodrides no jokes pls

is it just me, or do others think that punto suspension is maybe a bit suspect here?
as it appears there are lots of peeps with different tyres that can light em up when its atall damp!!

I can get mine to aquaplane in a suitably terrifying manor at 49mph on a bit of 'new' main road near me. the road is that slippery when wet its just a joke! (riding my pushbike on it before I've slipped over in the damp, really bad road surface).
punto = ~70bhp, and can aquaplane with no throttle whatsoever round them two bends.
saab = ~265bhp fwd, genuine scary car, with traction control off, with will wheelspin at that speed but not run wide!!!
