Bristol although I am a Geordie!, United Kingdom.
I have a mk2 Punto Sporting 16v had a problem with the wiper on the drivers side not moving. Looking more closely the linkage had come away from the drivers wiper. I have been told by the Fiat dealer that the wiper motor, linkage etc are not available separately as the linkage pivots on a rivot. This seems ridicoulous as the motor and linkages are £86 for the parts + labour and all cos the rivet is warn out and the car has only covered 32,000 miles! Has anyone else come up against this? I have checked with a couple of Fiat dealers and this seems to be the case.

Could this be in any way related to that faulty spec grease thing, mk2 guys?

Spirito di Punto | M-reg 55SX, black, 5dr. Clear repeaters. Remote locking fitted, no light confirmation yet though - need relay fitted

I've come across this. It is a separate problem from the whole wiper motor grease thing. I can also confirm that Fiat won't sell you the small black plastic 'ball joint type' linkage' that would probably cost next to nothing. Instead you've got to buy the whole assembly. My father in law runs a driving school and it happened to his entire fleet of Puntos (around 100k). Since I am a do-it-yourselfer I didn't want to accept Fiat's foolishness and fixed it myself. You've got to take out the assembly drill a hole in the pin that has popped out, stick it back into the black plastic linkage that has come apart and put a washer and cotter pin through the hole so it doesnt come apart again. Sprayed it with some lube and they worked fine.

I lube mine as a preventative measure. There are two of these linkages and mine were bone dry, corroded(as there is a plastic/metal mix in this assembly) and loose even though my Punto only has 50k on it. It's a matter of poor parts quality here.

I've hit the same problem, seems to be a money making exercise, I got quoted £108 without installation. They seem to plan these faults along with the Head Gasket. If you want to keep your Punto running after a few years they hit you for a grand or so. Encourages you to get a new one I suppose.

Thanks for the tip. I am planning to do something similar with the wiper linkage tomorrow morning and save me a bit of hassle. I'm going to use a bolt with two washers and see how that pans otu.

Regards,

Finlay

I can vouch for the cheaper option of simply aralditing a washer/one pence piece onto the end of each assembly (after reassembling the linkage). This has lasted me a full 12 months until both washers have fallen off within days of each other. I am now repeating the exercise. May incorporate the idea of tying the arms (allowing for some slack) with plastic ties as a back up.

I had the same thing happen to my mk2, If ound a cheaper fix, I used a small cable tie pushed through the hole on the linkage, and then press the ball back through. It's a bit of a tight fit but it works, got about two years out of it before it happend again. Hope this helps

well should should have had a fiddle made sure it was tight first then :p

It happened twice ;)

First time sat at traffic lights 2 minutes from home, which was fine. Got home and put it all back together made sure it was nice and tight. Then a week later it happened again going down the A3 in pouring rain. When the JTD is back on the road they are getting loctite'd on

Could be right though, one of the engine mounts have gone so the car shakes quite a bit at idle. I just say it's the power trying to escape :p
I took the whole lot out and drilled through each pivot, then fitted an M5 bolt and washers and locking nut, 3 hours all in.

I used the end of a wire coat hanger sawed it off and used it join the linkage together when mine broke. *touch wood* mine is still ok now! (y)

I had the same problem with my linkage. Replaced the whole thing :bang:. Very expensive, but the car wasn't just mine...
Now after about a year it's happened again. Rubbish parts from Fiat plus its ridiculous behavior to not supply just the rods. Greedy bast****.

I'm really ticked off at Fiat.

This time round I want to get those ebay rod thingys, but I was woundering how easy they are to install. I'm not terribly mechanically inclined nor do I have many tools.
The motor and linkages are hard to get to in their crevises... I probably have to take it to the mechanic to install them :(

Yep... plastic cable ties did the trick on my daughters Punto... still ok now despite the constant use in the snow up here.... Only temp I know, but does the trick....
