Hi guys n gals, Only just got myself a FIAT and I have scoured the fourum and it seems quite a few of you have had similar gearbox problems to myself. I have just purchased a Punto Sporting off Ebay knowing full well that the gearbox was shot. Upon delivery it really is truely, definately shot:mad: . There is a very loud nasty grinding/clicking sound in every gear almost when somebody tries reverse and doesn't quite get it in. When driving it small distance from the transport trailor to my drive the car actually stopped or rather shunted to a stop as if I had emergancey stopped only I was no where near the break so figure this is the box. I do not think I could make it to a garage as struggled parking it few yards further up on drive.

Basically I have been told that it needs a new gearbox. I am no mechanic but competant DIYer and fair with car maintenance. I have sorted a gearbox in my younger days on a Vauxhall Nova GTE:D . Basically I can't seem to find a Haynes manual covering the 1.6 Sporting. I don't even have the logbook yet so don't even know engine specifis (Waiting for DVLA to pull their finger out) but as soon as I get the logbook then will also tax and I want to drive her. All I know is that she is a 1.6 sporting and black with a dodgy gearbox.

Could anybody please point me along the way foward(y) :-

a) where I could get a haynes manual or similar covering the 1.6 punto sporting an dhow much should I expect to pay.

or b) talk me through quickly how to remove and swap a gearbox. if I can get one from another sporting.

Cheers folks hope you can help.

Matt

Nothing like a challenge for you is there.:worship:

Hi:wave:

Its not too bad (think its about 3hour booktime but would need to check) from memory.Dont need a manual cause were all here to help(y)

Post up pic/car details when they come through, also post a ad for gearbox on here as you never know;)

Cheers T14086, that was really nice.

I guess its true and I never thought of things like this but we are all like family :) Well we at least share something in comon.

The car is finally within my grasp it took me weeks to get it delivered from Liverpool. As it had no tax or logbook I couldn't risk driving it down and the gearbox letting me down. Although its insured and I have AA so the best thing would have been to get them to relay me for free. Anyway I paid a guy instead. Honest little me ;)

I had to put it on me mums drive 60 mile away from where I live as I can't fit 2 cars on our drive. (Other car is a Mazda MX-3) Next time i go over to me mums, hopefully soon, I will take some shots myself (As im a photographer) ;) I do however have the pics from ebay before we purchased it. I will try and upload them.

I will source a gearbox thanx for the advice. Ive had a £300 quote and £340 if fitting it and if I buy off them. Sod that for soldiers I will search the 4 corners of google earth if needs be to get one priced between £60 and £120 sounds fair.

Still, I would like a Haynes manual or similar. Does anyone know if the sporting 1.6 is covered in the haynes manual? I understand they did a max power punto special but I can't imagine this being good for general maintenance just moding. I swear by Haynes and this is now the third car I have had that they do not cover. I have seen one of these full CD manuals on Ebay for about a fiver covering many FIATs but not sure if any good. The punto is in the list however once again I'm not sure the sporting trim is covered. Has anybody had one or have one of these mentioned CD's?

Thanx again

Cheers Matt :)

Haynes do not do a manual for the sporting, there is a manual for it, not anyway near as good as a haynes though, but I cannot remember who it is by. I'll keep looking and post anything i find

Cheers Jabs, great info (y)

Will pop and check ebay but if not I think its worth £15 so ill get down my local WHSmith and order via the ISBN. Whoops! just remembered I don't have a local WHSmith as I live in the sticks. Will use a mail order company such as Amazon.

Just curious chaps does anyone know why my posted photos have gone missing, they were fine last night?

Cheers again

Matt :)

Amazon don't do it, order direct from the porter publishing site as per the link i gave you
