Hi (first post here) was hoping for some help or advice, I own a punto sporting mk1 1.2

I had the head gasket replaced a few months back at about 83k plus a head skim. car was working fine, then the other day i checked the water level and it had dropped from max to below min, so i topped it up and drove the car for a couple days and checked it again and the water level was down below min again, the car runs fine from cold and when warmed up (last time when the head gasket was going, there was hardly any water loss at all, but the car would run really horrible from cold (buring off water that had seeped into the cylinder/s while left over night)

ive checked all around for water leaks including heater matirx which is dry, cant see any leaks from the radiator etc...no mayo type stuff on oil cap, ran the car on my drive untill warmed up, fan kicks in and the temp them goes down slightly, so i should think the water pump is working ok. also oil level is ok and hasnt changed.

does anyone have any ideas whats going on, head gasket gone again or cracked cylinder head maybe (i dont know) would have thought the car wouldnt run very well if that much water was lost into the cylinders?

Cheers Matt.

There may have been an airlock in the system, so the level goes down after a while. I would not worry unless it seems to drop continuously

Hi, thanks for the reply, it seems to drop about an inch below the min line and stay there, untill i top it back up then it does the same again, could i have a broken water pump possibly ?

if pump is leaking water would pour out from it you would see it make sure you check car for drips when the engine is running anotehr tip to try is park over some cardboard handy while weather is dry then if you see wet patch on it after a while you can see were abouts its comming from. only other thing that i can think of that would let the water out is the cap were youa dd water being faulty.

had a look under the car and at all the pipes for leaks, cant see anything, the driveway is very clean and dry so i could see if some water dripped down, but nothing has.

Surely if that amount of water was leaking into the cylinders the car would run like a bag of crap!!! ? but it runs fine, and for that amount to go is quite alot really, it must be going somewhere but cant think of where.

it doesnt over heat (yet) maybe the pump isnt pumping around enough water or something and its being lost as steam...i dont know.
