I have an intermetent problem. Power steering stopped working for three days then worken again for one journey, then stopped again for 2 days . Today I took it to Fiat Bristol they charged me £70 to tell me I needed to replace whole unit for £650 including labour I said no way and drove the car away with steering not working. I stopped turned it on and off and it has been working for rest of day apart from once when it stopped working briefly. Question will this problem sort itself out eventually or will I have to replace the whole unit when I know it can work mkost of the time?

Afraid not Dave...parts not available seperately if out of warranty,I did correct this in another post earlier as I only found this out few days back.Only dealer can seperate the column, under warranty.
If I get time i'll do a guide thingy on this soon.

Yeah sorry bout that:eek: forgot to let everyone else know.I can only assume there is a safety issue here? last thing we wont is folk stripping columns down as they need to be callibrated & could lead to dangerous steering? dunno if thats the reason,i'm only going by what i've heard?
Although you can no doubt get good ones on ebay you can also get potentially dangerous ones, trust me on this.

hiya and snap. I have had exactly the same prob and these guys on here are great, they are right though as i'm sorry but your electric steering is gonna give up completely soon (mine managed a month from when I took it to the dealer after intermittnet probs) now it's as dead as a do- do! and my upper body strength has doubled!

I've got a thread on here which they have helped me with, hope it's useful:

Because I thought it was gonna go completely it gave me a bit of time to search around and I've just had delivered a reconditioned steering coloumn unit ( complete with motor, ecu ) cost me £285 incl vat + del. It is warranteed for 2 years, so just arranging to get it fitted now, then have to get it calibrated apparently although not sure what this means, but only FIAT can do it. here's a link, but you can also put 'remanufactured electric steering coloumn' in google to find more.

Shame about not being able to get the bits seperately, but there's absolutely nothing we can do about it. anyway, apparently common prob with the w reg's (just like the expensive head gasket I had done a week before the steering died grrrr) hope the links save you some hard searching.

Steering ecu is on the CAN network, body computer has to recognise this, examiner not only initialises the system but calibrates the torque sensors.I have seen columns fitted without carrying this out & warning light comes on or vague steering.

Hopefully cleared everything up in this guide....

Glad you nearly got it sorted Suz & keep posting/put up some pics etc(y)
