Hi The wifes punto 1.2 16v elx has started to activate the abs while breaking, this only happens when the car is coming to a stop.
there is no abs light coming on but the guy at the garage has said that it is the abs .
he has also quoted anything between 500 and 1k for repair!!!!!!!.

a friend suggested that i just remove the fuse for the abs.
after dooing this the problemb does go away but as expected the abs light, hand brake light both stay illuminated, also the speedo does not work.

i read somewhere on these forums that it is possible that a sensor is just dirty and could be cleaned.

i know nowt about cars so some guiadance would be appreciated please.

I don't know why your abs light only comes on when you brake but heres a way you can clean the sensor and magnetic strip on the back of the hub

On your hub there is a magnetic strip at the back which if is dirty can sometimes set the abs sensor off. I used some WD40 to clean it and the sensor. You need to remove your wheel, and you'll find two screws that hold your drums together. remove them with a size 12 spanner and hopefully the hub should come off with a bit of muscle. (If you get problems use a screwdriver and tap it against the front part of the drum to help it come away) Once thats off you'll see the hub and shoes. I may have some pictures that could help which I will post up or you can see on this link if it helps

Hope I've helped.

(I too have a 1.2 elx but my abs sensor kept coming on becasue on of the bearings were damaged on the right). There are experts on the forum who will help guide you to the exact reason to your fault.

(After you remove the drum). This picture has the hub already removed but I just wanted to show what the ABS sensor is. Its in red shown by the arrow.

Heres the pic of the hub, after you remove the drum. Red shows the hub. I'm sorry the pic doesn't show you where the magnetic strip is but its behind the hub, i've tried to indicate where it is in green

That's okay mate. Just remember the abs sensor and the magnetic strip is quite delicate so take care, when cleaning. (You might want to use cotton bud!)
