Technical new ECU, flashing light, what is wrong??

just found out that 2002 punto ecu units are on recall by Fiat Recall code 4679 and this will be replaced by official service centres free of charge. Fiat have recognised there is a problem with them.

You're right... didn't help. The IAW light still keeps coming on and the rev counter goes all over the place. Although it is getting progressively better the more I drive.

I reckon it's one of the sensors. The engine temp gauge has always been broken on this car (for years) so I reckon it could be the engine coolant sensor...would make sense as the car seems to be fine for the first 10 mintues from cold, then miss-fires more and more... at high revs it's fine, just horrible between 1500 and 3000.

Do you think replacing the engine coolant sensor would help?

... I don't really want to send it to a garage as everything is cost prohibitive for such a cheap car... I've spent £250 on this already - car's only worth £600 and ran perfectly until this happened.

OK,
what you could try is to unplug the tube from solenoid placed on top side of box of coal .. .in motor space. You'll se whether is better or not :)
try it...

what punto you got?
hi could you help me i have a punto 1.2 2002 16valve,the fault code p0105 has been scanned:slayer::slayer: map sensor has been replaced still fault code came back, found a small air leak repaired still the fault code came back.what else could this be ecu????
ps i don't know how to send a new question

Ah yes, real and good feelings....Even i had faced the same problems.

I had the same problem with my Punto 75 SX 1998. I read somewhere of someone who fixed the original problem of the car running on 2 cylinders problem just by unscrewing & unplugging the ECU and then plugging it back in. I tried that, but i grinded some rust of the screws that holds it in place at the same time. This actually fixed the problem - at least for now. The dealer recommended a new ECU fpr my punto too, but that would have set me back 1000 €, this solution didn't cost me anything.

OK the procedure you need to do is called phonic wheel learn.

Thanks for the advise mate, i had a problem after installing a 15bhp chip thing which i later found just pulls out the auto choke and wastes fuel and makes ur car run faster, but anyway the light is now off and the car is sorted after your advise cheers i was crapping it thinking ive broke my car:).

P.S dont buy or use the 15 bhp chip/ box MODULE by CELOX it is bad for your car!!! and can be costing you more in the long run!!!

Had the flashing yellow engine light after fitting a new crank sensor on 2001 1.2 8v Punto but my FCR showed no stored codes and the car was running ok - I was stumped. Luckily I found this thread and was able to read about the cause and cure for the 'phonic wheel' syndrome. Followed the re-learn procedure set out so clearly by The Sultan - and bingo - the light went out after the 3rd cycle. So a big thank you for a great thread.

OK the procedure you need to do is called phonic wheel learn, and basically your friend is right except for a few details.

The engine must be up to temperature (75 degrees plus), and the engine needs to be revved rapidly above 5000 revs and allowed to rev down on its own. The easy way to do this is just to stab at the throttle pedal and release it, the engine revs need to come down on their own so as soon as shes reached 5000 revs remove your foot completely from the throttle. This needs to be done three times in a row and provided you have done this correctly the light will stop flashing, switch the engine off and leave the ignition off for the power latch period (60 seconds) before restarting.

Numanr DET.

Genius!:)

Dont know where you got the idea from, bu it works THANKS A LOT

Ahghh...
If only I had seen this thread before !
The wifes Punto stopped working last week and the RAC man didn't have a clue. Nice bloke but obviously not heard of this seemingly common problem. He tried to replace the coil pack but obviously to no effect. Then could not find the ECU when he returned two days later to have another look. Also his computer was not working!
Anyway, a local Auto electrician diagnosed the problem and I have ordered a replacement ECU from ATP - see earlier in thread, along with coil packs - £240 all in! Seems like a good deal as the ECU is a new one! I will be fitting tomorrow hopefully!

Absolutely no need to replace the coils, all it needs is a new ECU. As you've said- the RAC already changed one with no effect.

The problem is that the ECU people will not warrant the ECU unless the coil packs are changed - so thought it best to get it all from one supplier. I thought it was a good deal until I got the receipt and goods! Although I asked if the price quoted (£240) included everything, they thought that the carriage and VAT did not fall into this element of the question!!!!!! Not best pleased and would recommend that anybody dealing with ATP Electronics is very careful.
Anyway, the missus car is running and means I am not on school duty in the afternoons!!

Also the RAC man only fitted one coilpack as he did not know the problem and thought the coil dealing with the two cylinders needed changing only - he will need to collect the 'old' unit and return to the distributor, or I will be having a bill for another £30! I am not prepared to put up with that!!

The problem is that the ECU people will not warrant the ECU unless the coil packs are changed

It's just what they use as a get-out clause if their repair on the ECU fails again.

The fault is caused by an internal design problem in the ECU, nothing caused by the coil. ;)

this is a question for anyone that knows if i get a second hand replacement ecu with the same part no.do i need to recode it before fitting or will it work as a plug and play ...my daughters car is a 05 punto 1.2 8v sole and its been having problems for a week now we have spent 200 at the garage and they have replace the leads plugs and both coils twice now they saying it will cost another 300 -450 to replace the ecu ...there are second hand ones on e-bay for 60 and i am concerned we are throwing good money after bad and chasing a problem ...the car is throwing up a 0352 fault primary and secondary coil B fault and will only run on 3 or 2 pots .....any help would be great ....
