I'm not sure how connecting a rev counter to the alternator would work!
On older cars like my mate's Mini, you can connect a rev counter to the distributor but I'm not sure what you'd have to do on a Punto with it's awkward electronic ignition. My 55SX has a rev counter as standard but I can't make head nor tail of the wiring diagram in the Haynes - it appears to connect to the ECU through some kind of relay and diode system. It's probably far more trouble than it's worth!
