if i bought a nice rev counter and mounted it on my dash how would i hook it up to the engine?

Firstly mate what year of your car, MK1 if you did not have a rev counter before you cannot fit one, i tried this with my old punto. I have heard that the MK2 can be fitted with a rev counter even if it didnt have one before but i am not too sure on this.

I'm not sure how connecting a rev counter to the alternator would work!
On older cars like my mate's Mini, you can connect a rev counter to the distributor but I'm not sure what you'd have to do on a Punto with it's awkward electronic ignition. My 55SX has a rev counter as standard but I can't make head nor tail of the wiring diagram in the Haynes - it appears to connect to the ECU through some kind of relay and diode system. It's probably far more trouble than it's worth!

i dunno, i just figured the faster the engine is running the more charge is generated by alternator

nobody uses alternator tachometers anymore i'm told, too unreliable. they use pulses from the coil pack now, maybe there's a plug off the ECU for a tachometer,

it didnt have one as standered, instead ive got a huge lovely clock! [V] ah well...

Is it not possible to fit a shaft encoder or tacho gen on one of the moving bits?

OK, this is what I have heard, if you do it its up to you.

Find the ECU, find the all blue wire, tap into it and run the wire into the input of your new tacho, wire the tacho into the plus and earth and it should work.
