My m plate punto 55 has just failed the MOT and while the garage is costing up the repairs i thought you could help me get ahead of the game.

Its failed on Emissions

Excessive play in n/s front suspension
Excessive play in o/s rear radius arm

On the emissions i will see what they say could be the oxygen sensor ? But on the suspension faults do you think it would be replacement of the front arm and the rear radius arm both as complete items or as i haven't got my Haynes book in front of me am i missing something?Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

I'm sure there is a fairly common problem with excessive wear on the rear radius arms on Puntos but my memory can be rubbish. With regard to the emissions, unless it's something more serious a good long run in the car before the MOT can improve them no end.

Further to my original post i need a bit more advice on changing the rear radius arm. As i belive from the Haynes book i need to swop the hub to the new arm will i need a puller to get it off and will the wheel bearings need replacing as the book seems to say removal destroys the old ones.Any one done this job and can advise?

Loook in Punto guides, I've posted how to replace rear arm bearings.(y)

Which emissions test was it? If it was the lambda then it might be an air leak in the exhaust system, gf's Peugeot failed by 0.001 %, I went over the joints in the system replacing some gaskets and using sealer, it then passed. If its HC might be too much oil in the sump, if CO consider fueling problem. Make sure its up to temperature before the test too, as previously advised.

Thanks for the info in the end i got a second hand rear arm so i only will have to change the brakes etc over .It failed on the Lamda reading 2nd fast idle test .As its one of these new computerised mot fail sheets it doesn't give any values just says its outside specified limits. If the weathers good tomorrow i will be starting the repairs so i am sure to be posting again for more advice.

Thanks Chris

By law the MOT station must supply you with the failure data from the emissions tester, get the info and post it here and we can then help.
