i am having a strange problem with my breaks and am hoping someone here can suggest somting.

at the moment when i get in my car first thing in morning first time i use breaks there is a grinding noise. as i use them more it gradually fades away. now i know that some times you get that rusty sheen on them if they get wet but its not that. because i park my car in a garage while at work but when i leave off it does same thing there is a grind noise from front drivers side wheel. again after a while it goes away.

i went to a mechanic tonight he took of wheel and inspected pads and discs wich were ok. i then drove to friends house breaks were quiet i was there 2 hours and when i came out first corner i got to the damn grinding noise was back i mean rust cant build up in 2 hours can it ?? lol

i thought maybe sumthing was leaking on to the disc??? but what ??

any suggestion would be good as i dont weally want to pay fiat to take a look at it for £35 a half hour check unless i really have to.

Hmm. If it was rubbing, you could usually tell by seeing if the wheel was warmer than the other side after a drive. But then you've had a bloke inspect the disc.. weird. I'd go with custard boy's check.

Is there evidence of a leak? If there's a leak round there it's going to be brake fluid.

it is a mk2? If so mine does this too.
Ive had me mk2 over a year a the brakes are s**t and still makes that grindin noise.
I guess its just one of those fiat things, sorry

FIAT!!! It Doesn't Move But It Looks Good!!

I also have 7 week old Mk2 Sporting with the same symptoms from new and if you have a look at the front discs in the morning you will see that there is a superficial layer of surface rust which combined with the hard Fiat brake pads causes the grinding noise that you are hearing. As mine is under warranty I am not changing anything, but a friend of mine has changed his brake pads (not Fiat type) and the noise has gone. After a few miles using the brakes frequently in traffic the noise goes on mine and if I look at the discs they are back to shiny

I have a 2 week old Punto Active Sport MK2 and mine does exactly the same, will get Dad to fit some non-Fiat discs in the new year i think.

I first thought it was worn pads (in 2 weeks!) but no, they are fine.

Must be one of them fings!

If you're putting non-standard pads on then it's worth the extra £££ to fit EBC Green pads, they need less pedal force than standard pads and don't fade unless you REALLY abuse them.
