I have a 1996 sporting and have recently changed my fuel pump, now when i come to start it the code light on the dashboard wont go out therefore the engine wont fire.

I have dicconected the battery and its now on charge hoping that when i puy it back on it may of cleared this fault, has anyone come accross this before?

mate sounds like you might have a water damaged ecu same thing happened to my 96 sporting if the heater matrix leaks it leaks onto the ecu and damages the ecu had the very same problems as you mate got the ecu reconditiond and soon as the car started take the ecu down and have a look yoy will find it if you take the carpet by the middle consol on the passenger side and its there have a look at the connection and open up the ecu and look for water damage as mine was pritty bad mate

i would say might be cheaper to get it reconditioned and also if the matrix has leaked you will need to get that sorted aswell if not could bypass the matrix for the short term and allso would be an idia to wrap up the ecu in plastic

if you are thinking of buying that ecu email the seller and find out what ecu it is as you can only fit the same one .it probly should be a gm ecu on yours bpjz as the 4 letter code V.M. Number 16214289 just take yours out and have a look

ive taken out and dicconected the ecu and your right the heater matrix is leaking the ecu its self seems in good condition but the conectors were soaking ive dried all components out now usuing an hairdryer,

After reinstalling the ecu i managed to start the car with the red key but after about 3 minutes of the car ticking over it cut out and now wont start again

oh and if i change the ecu will my existing keys still work or will i have to change everthing?

have you opened up the ecu itself as you might find corrosion on the board and pins as i did in mine i cleaned up the whole ecu with iso cleaner with no results and had to send off for a refurb and is sound now
