Hi
I hope someone can help me. I am going to look at a 1999 Punto 1.2sx SPi tomorrow. I know that SPi means single point injection, but is this the same as the punto sporting cuz the guy i spoke to says it is - I'm not so sure. Also, if anyone has any idea if £1000 is an ok asking price for this car (apparently in good condition and having done 70k mile), please enlighten me. As you can tell, i know almost nothing about cars and don't want to end up with a dud. One more thing, are there any key things i should look out for with this model? Should it have a red key? Thanks all! XXX(y)

Not usually from these parts but thought would drop by and help out if i could :D

1.2 spi will be the 60bhp motor, the sporting was 16valve 1.2, the 1.2 spi will be 8 valve :)

£1,000 sounds a good price to me but again one of the guys from these parts will be able to confirm that for you :D should have a red key i think (y)

Also welcome to the forum  :D

Edit: changed mind on the engine on second thoughts, i think there was a 1.2 sx "85" model which was the same 16v engine as in the sportings :) however i'd assume the spi would mean its the punto 60 engine which is as above the 8 valve model of the 1.2

In the 1.2 range there is the '60' which is 60bhp 1.2 single point injection, '75' 75bhp 1.2 multi point injection, and also the '85' 1.2 16 valve (same as found in sportings) Hope this helps

welcome to forum:wave:

The spi is in not much way related to the spi 60sx.

The sporting is a 1.2 16v (thats twin cam, and has a big head at top of engine), err its MPi, and kicks 85bhp, it should also be 3door, and won't have any letters after it as it got ALL the trimmings.

You are looking at a 60SX, which is Spi, but with half a 75engine componants, your 60SPi, willbe a 75Mpi, which is what I have done to mine, only cost me £45 (although I forgot fuel pump :bang: ).

The 1999 60sx, for £1k is a good price, still check it over in usuall manor, make sure headgasket, cam belt and clutch have been done if its done 70k (as mine has hit 74k, and have had to do all three in a matter of two weeks ££££ :bang: :bang: :bang: ) then it should go on to 120k before you need to do anything else to it again.

Happy motoring!(y)

1k isnt a bad price =) others will say you can get fo £600 form the right person. But to be honest i payed 1.1k for my car, and i have no regrets :D and ba da da dar im loving it :D lol

Wow! Thanks guys! Excellent answers and advice(y) And thanks for the warm welcome:) I know that it has a new gearbox, clutch and exhaust, but not sure about the hea gasket or cam belt. Will have to check it out tomorrow. If these havn't been done, what kind of price am i ooking at to get them replaced and can i get him down on price because of this:devil: Thanks again chaps!!:peace:

£1000 sounds a lot, but if it's from a dealer and it has a warranty with it, and full service history, I don't spose it's too bad. The guy obviously doesn't know his Punto's lol, could be a genuine mistake, or he could just be saying it's the same engine to sell you the car. Might sound cynical of me, but you've gotta be wary of these car dealers! (no offence to any car dealers intended :D :p )

Price sounds right, and as has been said it is the 60SX which has a totally different top-end of the engine to the 85 16v (be the latter Sporting, ELX, SX).

Nice car the 60SX. As for the head gasket, check the engine collant bottle has clean water in it (i.e. no sludge) and open the oil filler cap; if the oil is black or gold then it's fine, but if it has a creamy look to it then the gasket needs doing.

The 75 block is different from the 60 block. The 75 is better.

I find £1000 a bit to much. Can get them much cheaper in these days.

I know the 75 is slightly different, I had a hell of a job trying to match up gaskets and 75head, 60 block, the water ways are different fricking shapes!!
Bit of customisation with a stanley knife sorted it, and hasn't used a ml of water yet so must have been a good job!!

Welcome to the Forum,

£1000 seems to be about right, obviously some ask for more and others less. 70k is a reasonable mileage and as long as the bodywork is fine along with the engine its worth a grand of anyones money. Fiats tend to be alot cheaper than a equivalent Ford, Vauxhall etc - don't know why.

The 1242cc engine is a great workhorse and used across the fiat range.

Good luck, look foward to seeing another possible 60SX FF'er. :)

Matt

Just thought i'd report back on the said Punto i went to see last night. First of all it was owned by a19 year old wanna-be boy racer chav (no offence to any 19 year-olds out there!). I may be unfairy judging him, but i assumed he had probably thraped the car.The body work was dented and he'd had a bump to the back so the rear bumper was pretty badly scratched and it was pactically rubbing against the back tyres. It had obviously been driven over a speed bump too quickly aswell cuz the underside had been bashed about. It only had MOT and tax until Feb and needed two new tyres. So i offered him £800. He said he'd ring me back if he was interested in selling it to me. Don't really want it - i just got a bad gut feeling about it! (n)
Anyway, going to see a couple of others today. Fingers crossed!(y)

you can't fit four white water kayaks on the roof of a cinq, and then proceed to drive that (and a car loaded with 4peeps, and 4peeps full wet suit gear etc, down the A1 at top speed, I think the punt managed 65mph!!! And would have taken off if I went any faster anyway, that and the obvious CoG messing about.

Hi
I bought my last Punto from an auction, (about 4 years ago). I would have tried an auction again but unfortunately i need wheels now (spent £60 in taxi's getting to and from work last week) Anyway, I finally bought one today. An R reg 60sx in almost mint condition (slight scratches on right hand side of rear bumper where someone had scufed it). Metallic maroon with bcb. 60k on the clock. They wanted £1100 but got them down to £900. What dya reckon? ANyway, thanks for everyone's advice.:D
