Hi guys.
I have an 'early' HGT and we just replaced (the ridiculousy located) cam sensor so obviously wanted to do the cam belt at the same time even though the original one was ok. However, there seems to be 2 different belts ( 1 has 166 teeth and one has 168 teeth) as the one I ordered seems to be too small.

Apparently Fiat modified the head gasket at some point so i'm guessing this is the reason for 2 different sizes of belts. Can anyone clarify this for me please?

If you have the composite head gasket its thicker, so it needs the 168 teeth belt. The later engines had a multi-layer steel gasket which is thinner so it needs a 166 teeth belt.

An easy way to tell is if you have a throttle cable its an early engine (CF1, 168 teeth). If its got an electronic throttle its a later one (CF2,CF3, 166 teeth).

This might be a bit late now but Fiat fitted cams with the same spec as a 1.6 Alfa TS as standard, the 1.8/2.0 cams have more lift & you gain about 10bhp. Obviously you'd need the different cam locks to fit them.

Thanks. Apparently then, I have the earlier engine (new in 2000) which is roughly when the HGT came out. But the strange thing is that the new belt has 168 teeth but (for some reason) is too tight to fit so we put the old belt back on (which is still in good condition) and that went on quite easily.

But I will double check to see if it has a cable throttle or not.

Again, thanks for your help. (y)

An old belt that looks in good condition can still be unserviceable. Regardless of miles the belt should be changed at least every 5? years. Synthetic materials do not remain flexible with age. The belt gets a very hard life.
