Whwn changing front brake discs on a an X plate punto 1.2, do i have to remove the large nut in the centre of the hub. Lokking at it, it seems like you do not have to, but it won't budge with every other means of attachment removed.

No, you do not. Remove wheel. Remove pin at bottom of caliper to remove pads. Then look behind caliper and you will see to 17mm bolts holding caliper to stubaxle. Undo these, and just let caliper hang. Then undo the two 12mm bolts that hold disc in postion and remove disc. Sometimes a hammer comes in handy as the discs can stick. Refit as removel, Make sure you do not kink flexi brake hose when refitting caliper....
