General gearbox noise

General gearbox noise

All that as well... I used red thread lock on the bolts but I did tighten it straight away. My wrench only went down to 25nm so I guessed it by hand [emoji849][emoji17]
I'm not doing the box so I'll just have to leave the oil to drain. It's not being used so I could leave it draining a few days
After gearbox has drained before you start task jack up left hand side well so any remaining oil will flow into gear box away from joint you want to seal.
Brake cleaner spray will degrease surface and evaporate quickly so handy prior to using rtv

Pretty annoying it has not worked. :(

Granville make a black water proofing RTV for cars in a large tube needing a skeleton gun.

Liquid in the screw holes? Gasket tighened too quickly? Let it go tacky and finger tighten initially. Torque is super low. 8? Keep oil away for 24 hours unless you have something like permatex right stuff which can get oil after 20 minutes. You will need to keep the cover upright or wait until the oil stops draining?? These jobs are not easy without compressed air and a workshop.

How do I know how tacky or how long to leave it please?
Sorry for the stupid questions ?

I've got brake cleaner so that's no problem ??
Good idea about jacking engine up which I will do anyway due to removing the gearbox mount

Bought some black RTV today from my local motor factor's...... It actually says on the instructions to leave to skin for fifteen minutes before assembly and not to overtighten.
Well what do you know! Someone knows their stuff on here.... We'll done!

Hopefully you have better luck with it this time. RTV needs to produce a gas or absorb water so the hardening rate per mm in 24 hours is not very high.

I took my gearbox off yesterday because I was convinced the input bearing was going again. Whatever the problem is it was not the input bearing! And I broke my jack and had to weld it up............. That was a solid days work. How people can do these jobs in a few hours is beyond me.

Hope you sorted your gearbox out?

Did the gearbox cover last night.
Found if I took the wheel off and removed six screws I could shift the under wing plastic thing.
I thought I was going to have to remove the battery and engine mount to get to it so that was easier.
All cleaned up with brake cleaner. Rtv applied to the cover and left for fifteen minutes. Also bought a new torque so I did it at 5nm as the manual states.
Just got to put the oil back now and fingers crossed ?

It seems to be better. The old bearing was apparently in very good condition. There was almost no difference in the feel of the two bearing side by side after I had put penetrating oil in them to make it easier to feel any problems.

I was getting a whirring noise in 2nd sometimes when pulling away and listening with the screw driver i got a rattle. When I last checked I was still getting the rattle when it was cold but i dont get the whirring.

I am probably over thinking it.

Let's hope you were......
Oil now in and driven and checked out today and nice and dry so fingers crossed its fixed. Just got to sort this flashing abs/airbag light out from me taking the fuse out. I really didn't think it would cause such a problem?
