Do I need to replace my head gasket?
Oil coming from left and right (see pic)

The oily marks I can see are at the TOP of the engine

The gasket faces there are loosely sealed by a glorified rubber band

The Head Gasket is @100mm below that oily section

Look in cinq-sei section for tips on your cosmetic leaks

That's not the head gasket it's the cam cover gasket.

I think the 1.2 8v engines are the same from the MK1 to the Mk2s? Someone please correct em if I'm wrong.
It's only the late MK2Bs that changed and are the same that went in the early GPs. If you've a square pull off oil cap then it's an early engine, if it's a round screw cap then it's a late engine.

Take it apart.. clean faces..wipe over the seal

(Flip out the tin baffle too.. probably fithy under there)

Apply a little sealant / instant gasket

Reassemble.. all 4 bolts need only be 'snug'.. or you risk warping it

Do you mean wipe over the old gasket and add sealant onto that?

Yes.. its basically an o.ring

So a smear of sealant all around it works wonders

When the cover is off.. prise off the thin metal baffle plate.. there is usually all kinds of gunk under it
