Thats nice and cheap isnt it.. :)

Is it all you need though.. or 'bare'?

If you follow the link (which is working now) you'll see it is item 4, which is the part of the column with the motor and motor ECU on it, which is all you need.
The only thing...is it for the early MK2s or the late MK2s? As they say on the page, let them know the chassis number before ordering.

Can I get replacement?

New earth cables should be easy to get. You could also just take them off and clean the chassis where they bolt on and grease them up so they don't corrode again.
There is an earth underneath the battery, it's a pain to get to, it goes from the wheelarch to the gearbox (I think). That coul be causing an issue.

If it isn't the earth, the battery or the alternator then that leaves one obvious candidate which you seem to be avoiding....the steering column. I think you're going to have to bite the bullet and either get a new one, put up with it or sell the car!

Cables fail internally.. not sure 'polishing the ends .' will fix it..

Before you spend that much time and money on a column replacement..why not read the Codes and see which failuremode is putting the light on?

Very true, although.....earth cables are pretty chunky things, in my experience taking the ends off and cleaning up the contact areas has generally helped and certainly not hindered. You are of course quite right, if a cable is dodgy internally no amount of cleaning the terminals is going to help.

My money is on the motor / ecu being the culprit. I'm not sure when Fiat updated the motors, as this is an 04, could it have the earlier version? The 02 Punto we had was displaying the same symptoms, I didn't even check the battery, alternator or cabling, just plunged straight in and changed the column and that cured it.

Thanks for the info guys. As far as I know it's the motor without relays. I think it's an early mk2b active sport. Is it worth buying a fault reader? If so which do you suggest? Or fork out the 25 quid for garage?

Of course I'm avoiding shelling out half what the car cost ?
Just ruling out things like loose connection as it happens 4 or5 times one day then not at all for weeks?
Is it worth checking connections under steering wheel as a last resort before shelling out?

Main earth cables.. battery neg to ground..
they tend to break down internally.. struggling to cope with large loads
May be the issue! Yesterday I undid all the earth points, cleaned thoroughly and reattached. Steering failing like mad now!!
It did start doing it after I initially took the black box earth off the day before to a lesser extent. I didn't want to butcher the box to get inside it but now I'm thinking it may be corrosion inside? Either that or pulling the cable around has aggravated the internal cable? Is there a temporary fix till I can source a cable? Is there a way to test the cable to see if its goosed?

Hmmm, if it's got worse since you cleaned the cable terminations then that cable sounds like it's the culprit and moving it around has made it worse :(
You can get generic earth cables from Ebay for a few quid. Measure the one on the Punto and get one to replace it, if they haven't got the exact size then get one a bit longer

With regards to the sterring column wiring, you can get to all that, if you want to get into the ECU and look at the witing you'll need to take it off.
There is a guide for this, photos are further down the post:

I understand where you're coming from on the cost front.
My Punto cost me £200. I've had it 3 years and spent out on, battery, alternator, exhaust, brake discs and pads. All of that was expense that I didn't mind spending as it wasn't costing me anything for the MOTs as it's quite a solid little car.
Last MOT the advisories were the rear coil springs are very rusty and the anti-roll bar bush is perishing. The clutch is also slipping so I know that needs doing (but it's been slipping since I had it!). Its getting to the point where the cost of maintaining her is almost outweighing keeping her.

Thank you so much for the links!!
I was just about to start trawling the t'internet!
I know what you mean about cheap car maintenance but since I can't afford a new motor it's the way I have to go to keep my beloved punto going!
I've had 2 mk2's in the past both 2a and 2b 16v sporting. Despite their pas problems I still got this one. They are without doubt the best looking stylish hot hatch ever made!!!!!!

Sorry to be a pain but do i need to remove the old cable or just piggy back the new cable into the old?

Once you get a new cable, replace the old, I wouldn't advise keeping it.

We're a bit of an Italian car family, currently got a Giulietta QV line, this is the Mrs motor and she doesn't like the dog going in it so my Punto (MK2B Active) is designated dog car.
Previous to that we've had an Uno turbo ie, Bravo HGT, Mk2 Punto, Grande Punto, Bravo (newer shape).
I'm currently saving to replace this Punto but I just don't know what to replace her with.

That might be difficult as one end has the clasp at the battery terminal?

I suppose I could just cut them off?
