they tend to break down internally.. struggling to cope with large loads
Can I get replacement?

Thats nice and cheap isnt it..
Is it all you need though.. or 'bare'?

New earth cables should be easy to get.
If it isn't the earth, the battery or the alternator then that leaves one obvious candidate which you seem to be avoiding....the steering column. I think you're going to have to bite the bullet and either get a new one, put up with it or sell the car!
Cables fail internally.. not sure 'polishing the ends .' will fix it..
If you follow the link (which is working now) you'll see it is item 4, which is the part of the column with the motor and motor ECU on it, which is all you need.
The only thing...is it for the early MK2s or the late MK2s? As they say on the page, let them know the chassis number before ordering.
Where is this main earth grounded?Main earth cables.. battery neg to ground..

New earth cables should be easy to get. You could also just take them off and clean the chassis where they bolt on and grease them up so they don't corrode again.
There is an earth underneath the battery, it's a pain to get to, it goes from the wheelarch to the gearbox (I think). That coul be causing an issue.

May be the issue! Yesterday I undid all the earth points, cleaned thoroughly and reattached. Steering failing like mad now!!Main earth cables.. battery neg to ground..

Hmmm, if it's got worse since you cleaned the cable terminations then that cable sounds like it's the culprit and moving it around has made it worse
You can get generic earth cables from Ebay for a few quid. Measure the one on the Punto and get one to replace it, if they haven't got the exact size then get one a bit longer

With regards to the sterring column wiring, you can get to all that, if you want to get into the ECU and look at the witing you'll need to take it off.
There is a guide for this, photos are further down the post:

I understand where you're coming from on the cost front.
My Punto cost me £200. I've had it 3 years and spent out on, battery, alternator, exhaust, brake discs and pads. All of that was expense that I didn't mind spending as it wasn't costing me anything for the MOTs as it's quite a solid little car.
Last MOT the advisories were the rear coil springs are very rusty and the anti-roll bar bush is perishing. The clutch is also slipping so I know that needs doing (but it's been slipping since I had it!). Its getting to the point where the cost of maintaining her is almost outweighing keeping her.

That might be difficult as one end has the clasp at the battery terminal?Once you get a new cable, replace the old, I wouldn't advise keeping it.
We're a bit of an Italian car family, currently got a Giulietta QV line, this is the Mrs motor and she doesn't like the dog going in it so my Punto (MK2B Active) is designated dog car.
Previous to that we've had an Uno turbo ie, Bravo HGT, Mk2 Punto, Grande Punto, Bravo (newer shape).
I'm currently saving to replace this Punto but I just don't know what to replace her with.
I suppose I could just cut them off?Once you get a new cable, replace the old, I wouldn't advise keeping it.
