Hi,
I have the engine out of my 05 plate mk2. It has done around 100k and thought it might be prudent to change the timing chain while the engine was out. Can anyone tell me how to make sure I don't loose the timing?
Any other tips and tricks for this job would be appreciated.
Thanks

Sorry, forgot to mention it's the 1.3 multi jet.
Thanks.

You need the timing kit. Lots available, vary in price/quality.
Check for "z13dt" cam chain change for online videos.
Fairly straightforward job, but you do need to take the sump off, and there are a few steps which are not entirely intuitive.
And a few "gotchas" which make it worthwhile watching a few videos first.

(Much easier with the engine out, but possible with it still in if you have small but strong hands and a fairly inexhaustible supply of cuss words.)

Thanks. I watched a couple of videos and ordered a timing kit. Just fitted a new oil sump as the old one was corroded. Suppose it will have to come off again.

Cheers

Not obvious why you need to take the sump off. This video says it is possible to leave it on but there is a risk of a leak. Maybe because the join between the sump and the timing cover is not fully cleaned of oil?
