Hi! First of all, thanks for the all the usefull info on this site!
My grandparents gave me their Fiat Punto (GIFTED, could you even believe that?!). I am very happy with it, and doing my best to maintain the car well and drive it with care.
Since recently i start getting a very unusual wobble while driving. The wobble seems to be, looking from above the car, rotational along the central axis. At first this was only noticeable at around 40 Kmh (25 mph), by now it is constantly noticeable, no matter what speed im driving. However, its peak is still at 40 Kmh. When letting go of the steering wheel while driving, it isn't rotating whatsoever and the car keeps going straight(ish). While driving on the highway the car certainly is wondering more than it did 6 months ago.
The wobble doesn't seem to get worse or less while accel/decell nor when using the clutch. 'How bad is it?' - Well, bad to the point its throwing around a few drill bits in the door storage compartiment constantly & bad enough to let a friend mechanic go 'WTH?'.
I expected to find an obviously failed part, but i have not.
So far i've checked wheel balance, wheel roundness, wheel bearings, brakes not rubbing, no obvious worn parts regarding steering/suspension.
After very close inspection it seems both front wheels running like 3mm (1/5 In) out of round, with the wheel bearing being its pivot point.
No obvious wobbly driveshafts, but of course, this was checked with wheels of the ground and not under load. All CV's seem to be OK. Oil seals at the diff leaking slightly. Can slightly move the cup in the diff.
I can think of 2 mayor events prior to this problem:
-Changed gearbox because of a bearring failure (Ball came through the gearbox housing, ending up at the clutch, another ball right in front of the drain plug hole)
-My girlfriend's just got her license and smacked the car over a speed bump doing 90 km/h (55 mph). I was in the passenger seat, i was scared to death, but i didn't hear any mechanical knocks/bangs.
Does anyone have any idea's how to solve this dreadfull wobble?
