Hi All,

So my punto mk2 1.2L 8v 2002 was running fine, but just today after work when I turned it on, it immediately went up to 2000 rpm, when usually it stays at 800 rpm at idle. Funny thing is, when I engage a gear and start driving, the crazy 2-4000 rpm go down to normal 1500 rpm and the car thankfully doesn't rush off but drives normally. When I change gear and go into neutral, or when I am stuck in traffic and put it in neutral, the revs go crazy high.

Lately I've been noticing a sticky gas pedal, which was harder to push and sometimes sticks a bit and then releases. I cleaned the throttle plate with air intake cleaner but that didn't fix the problem. I assumed it was a sticking accelerator cable and left it as it was not bothering me too much and I couldn't find a cable in my area. Don't know if the sticky pedal has to do with this.

I checked the throttle plate today and it doesn't seem stuck open. Also, the gas pedal is not depressed so that is not the cause of the high RPM.

No fault codes on OBD scanner.

Also, when I disconnect the Idle control Valve sensor, the rpm goes even more up (so I assume that if it is a bad sensor the rpm would stay the same as if there is no functioning sensor in the first place).

What are the causes of this fluctuating high idle in neutral please?

Last point, For the last few months, my air filter assembly has been loose, as unfortunately all the points where it attaches securely to the engine are broken and the clip is gone (bought second hand), so many times the black pipe which goes into the filter box is not attached to it. Don't know if that makes a difference, I was thinking perhaps a dirty throttle body/intake manifold?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am stuck without a car, thank you!

Thank you for your help. The culprit was a sticking Idle Air Control Valve. Had to clean it and soak it multiple times to finally get the rpm's down to normal (900rpm)..with every clean the idle went down a bit every time.

Thanks again :)
