Hi all
Some weeks ago my 2001 Punto started to vibrate heavily when accelerating between 35 and 50 mph. After some days the vibrations became constant and a deep rumbling sound started to appear from the front end of the vehicle. The rumble became more and more intense as did the vibrations. It is hard to completly pinpoint the origin of the rumble, but I’d say it comes from the right side of the front.
Here comes the strangest part. When cranking the steeringwheel to the left, even an inch while driving, the sound and vibrations stop completly.
My thought was maybe its the frontwheel bearing. What are your ideas?
Thanks

Don't know about the vibration, but the rumble going off when turning left does point to right wheel bearing. Jack right front wheel up,place your hand on the front wing, and you will feel the vibration/roughness through the wing with your hand flat on it.

Maybe I ask stupid, but what is the front wing? And should the engine be running?

Hi,with engine off, spin the wheel. If unsure,Jack the other front wheel up and compare the two.Front wing is the metal body panel above the wheel and buts up to the bonnet. Hope this helps.

I’ll give it a go. Thank you :)

My example of locating a wheel bearing noise

On a flat road - you get your rumble

If you steer slightly left
The right side is loaded up more vs lhs
If the noise increase or you can still hear it - chances are its the rhs

If you steer sligtly right
The lhs loads up while rhs lightens up
If the noise goes its looking to be like wheel bearing or tyre issues

----

My 2nd checks are

Jack the car up and secure on stands with rear wheels chocked

A friend/family member will help here
As the engage drive (2nd or 3rd gear)
Hold onto the spring
Does the spring vibrate more va the other?
If so - again it adds to you diagnosis

-----
3rd
Its jacked up
Shake wheel at 3+9 & 12&6
Does it feel loose?
Note - some bearings can be noisey as hell but cause no play

I think my troublesome puntos developing a bearing issue too...
