I was thinking of fitting a gps tracking device to my punto, I wanted it hard-wired so it would be permanently be working. Has anyone done this before, if so whereabouts would I fit it to the wiring system.

Thanks.

Most are self contained these days and can be mounted anywhere so long as the magnets stick.

If you want one with a charger plumbed in I wouldn't wire it to a permanent live, but if you insist use one inside the car. Stereo or interior light feed. An extra wire to the battery would be obvious.

The live feed from the tailgate light switch so you can hide the box behind the sub, trim or spare wheel well. :)

Personally I would place it behind the carpet in the passenger foot well with a 12V charger wired up to the cigarette lighter feed.

I do understand the idea of it
But
Most mk2 puntos aint worth having a tracker fitted.....

Sure your brand new porsche or lambo
But to a already 12 - 18year old punto?

If its gonna be nicked its gonna get smashed up....
Its a task to get past the immboliser so if they can do that.... theyll knock any trackers out too....

There are methods that can be used to defeat trackers. They are illegal on several grounds. I'm not going to give details on a public forum for what are hopefully obvious reasons.
There are also reasons other than theft for fitting a tracker especially if others drive your car.....

I was looking at doing the same thing, may also reduce the insurance cost? (I've only been driving a year + half, so my insurance is alot).

Looks as though there are several types, the one I liked the most due to ease of use was the odb2 one, which plugs directly into the odb2 port.

Vodaphone have released a number of smart IOT devices, one of them is a odb2 enabled gps tracker called Vodaphone V-Auto: https://shop.v.vodafone.com/UK/V-Auto

I was passing a Vodaphone shop and saw it was on sale at £42 for device + £4 monthly cost. I have a feeling other mobile networks will start releasing these type of devices as well, hopefully bringing the price down.

There are also independent companies which provide them, like Rewire Security as well as chinese clones? some are like the one above, others require hard wiring. From what I have seen you just run two cables to the battery, one negative / positive and stash the tracker in a waterproof case and install somewhere in engine bay e.g.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/102-NANO...029988&hash=item35d0111d01:g:Z50AAOSwgZ1XwBWP

Most of these independent ones require a sim which requires topping up every few months depending on use as well as an optional? online portal subscription, so in the end can work out costing quite a bit, which is why I like the V-Auto one above.

As suggested in other comments, there are ways of defeating it, either by external devices or knowing where to look to remove it, obd2 port on punto is easy to get to.

Tbh I don't get it either.

Now, in Greece a 2001 & 2002 Punto Mk II sells from 1500 to 2990 euros depending on mileage and extras.

You can have a look below:

https://www.car.gr/classifieds/cars/?condition=%CE%9A%CE%B1%CE%B9%CE%BD%CE%BF%CF%8D%CF%81%CE%B9%CE%BF&condition=%CE%9C%CE%B5%CF%84%CE%B1%CF%87%CE%B5%CE%B9%CF%81%CE%B9%CF%83%CE%BC%CE%AD%CE%BD%CE%BF&make=124&make=124&model=144&offer_type=sale&pg=1&registration-from=%3E2000&registration-to=%3C2002

In the UK however, and for reasons I can't quite fathom, Puntos Mk II sell for 500 quid if you are lucky. If you are unlucky, apparently you HAVE TO PAY someone to take the lot from your yard and dispose of it.

Therefore, if you are a car thief in the UK, it just doesn't make sense to steal a Punto Mk II.
