Hello all :)

Was wondering if anyone here who is a bit more knowledgable on lighting could give me some advice on what to do with my puntos headlight and whether what I was planning on doing to remedy it would be correct.

It started in september when my car failed its Mot for fogged up headlamps, there was a set of aftermarket ones on ebay that I brought for £70 cause I thought it might be a nice plug and play swap and I'd end up with a pair of nice shiny headlights. After fitting them it was apparent the passenger side one was having issues as the sidelight bulb wouldn't come on despite the fuse being fine. In haste to get it back to the Mot place I ran a piggyback to it from the drivers side and all has been fine since.

However the other day I noticed my dipped beam bulb (h7) was out (same headlight) I pulled the connector off to have a look see if the bulb was blown and once I got the connector off I noticed the plastic on the plug had melted slightly and the red wire had burned away where it meets the plug (bulb not blown)

So with this I was wondering whether it would be adviseable to have a go cutting and crimping a new plug onto it (the ones the sell at halfords) and changin the fuse which likely blew or whether I should go about seeing a breaker and getting an oem headlight cause this aftermarket one may have some gremlins?

Also if I was to change the plug it occured to me that the h7 plugs people are selling have one black wire and one red wire whereas the one on this headlight has two black wires. Should I just crimp both black wires down to one going to the plug?

Thankyou very much for reading my post and any experiences or advice on the matter would be highly appreciated. Sorry if it seems abit rambly also, this is my first post but I've been using this forum for a while to find help on other things and its always been helpful. Can update with pictures later but its dark outside currently.

Many thanks

Bill

Hi and welcome to Fiat Forum.
It does sound like the replacement lamps you have are poor quality. Replacing the lamp holders is one option. Another is to polish the plastic lenses of the old ones if you still have them. Are the aftermarket ones "E" marked (they should have an E in a circle and a number molded in the lens)? If not you should change them anyway as they are not approved.

Yeh I would have thought as much. very odd however cause the other light has been good as gold. Think I might replace it with a light from a breaker car. Also very interesting about that E marking. I have not noticed it. Is it scratched into the glass on the front?

Just as an update to the post, I have fitted a headlight off of a spares and repair punto on ebay which I got for £20. All working fine, well worth it. Thanks for your advice and knowledge ? I'll look to avoid aftermarket electricals in the future to be honest.

And just a bit of info, if the plastic lens goes cloudy again use one of the products on Ebay to wipe the lens clear again instead of changing light unit(y)
