My 1.2 Punto 188 has around 70k miles on it and is a 2000 car. Recently we changed onto winter tyres (essential here in sweden) and since then there's a vibration which goes right through the car. It's worst as certain speeds, like around 50mph, where it resonates fairly badly. The vibration is felt through the whole car rather than in the steering and the wheels and tyres have been re-balanced but that didn't solve it.

What could cause this? The other, perhaps significant detail, is the swap to winter tyres was carried out by a local tyre place and we had lost the key to the locking wheel nuts (or rather, another local mechanic had kindly lost it for us following some work carried it in the summer). I believe the tyre place removed the locking wheel nuts by welding a nut onto the locking one.

I can't work this one out, as changing wheels shouldn't introduce a vibration unless the wheels are out of balance, which has been checked and doesn't seem to be the case. Could it be wheel bearings (maybe on the rear axle so not felt via steering wheel), but if so, why did it start the day they changed tyres?

Different wheels have different offsets which could be causing tyre scrubbing

Also yes a nut welded onto the nut can cause an imbalance
Swap the damaged nuts of standards (cheapest option) to see if this cures it

Check the true of the rims
If a wheel rim is bent / untrue it can cause vibrations

Assuming all 4 winters are the same?
But try a rear to front rotation

And finally
Tyre pressures!

What rubber has been fitted outta curiosity??

Did you buy and place Tigar “wintera” winter tyres?

Hi, some people say that, car does vibrate with these tyres. I have them too, but can’t say they are bad. On the other hand I am experiencing the same issue when going 110-130 km/h. Whether i drive summer or winter season tyres. I was advised to check the exhaust system...

My winter tyres make a roaring noise compared to the summer tyres. There is now more rattling/buzzing coming from the top of the front seat belt mountings which was barely noticeable before the tyre change. Are you experiencing resonating or wobbling?

Thanks - the nut was only welded on for the purposes of removing the old locking wheel nut. Now a standard wheel stud is fitted, so no imbalance there.

The tyres I should mention are not new, they're the ones which have been on the car for a couple of previous winters. Around here we all have two sets of wheels with tyres mounted and just swap between them summer and winter. A warped wheel is possible but then I wonder why it wasn't vibrating last spring before those wheels were taken off.

I'll try swapping the front tyres with the back. Seems a logical place to start and I need to check the brake pads anyway.

Tyres fitted are Delinte WD52 which is a brand I've never heard of, but were probably the cheapest ones when my wife bought them!

Not sure if resonating or wobbling, it's just a strong vibration right through the car. It's worst at the speed mentioned because it probably resonates with something else (suspension or chassis) to make the vibration worse, but it's present at all speeds I would say. The suggestion of bent wheel rim sounds about right, I'm just not sure how it got bent when the wheels seemed fine in the spring.

Did you fix the vibration issue?

I got my Punto late last year and it was horrible to drive, everything worked but it was horrible to drive. One of the wheels was very slightly buckled, but it was actually the tire that had deformed which was causing the real problem.

Check the tyres for any signs of a blister or 'egging' where the tyre has become an oval. Jack the car up and spin the wheel (check for any exposed plys of stones in the grip) then cup the wheel in your hands and let it spin in your hands, you should feel any oddities.

If the tyres are a few season old and you keep them stored with pressure in them, the rubber might have perished slightly and deformed, or they could be exposed to sun in a particular spot etc etc.

Hi beefcake, thanks for your advice. So far I didn't fix it, but then I must admit I haven't tried the things suggested earlier in the thread, just got busy with other things. I will try what you suggested first, before swapping wheels front and back. These winter wheels+ tyres are stored with air in them between spring and autumn seasons, stacked on their sides in a pile, so quite feasible there could be some deformation.
